It was a terrific experience reading my poems on Sunday morning at #KingsLynnPoetryFest. Thank you Tony Ellis, brilliant founder & chairman, for the opportunity. Half of what I read was from my #surVision pamphlet and half was new work.
Today, Sunday at 3pm: Favourite Poems and Poets since 1945. The writers will each choose five poems written since the Second World War.
The festival will close with tributes to mark the end of an era as the festival’s founder, Tony Ellis, retires as chairman and director.
Today Sunday morning’s guests are: the exceptional poet of this parish Alison Dunhill; Christopher Reid, the first poet to win the Costa Book award; and Lachlan Mackinnon with his wonderful collection, The Missing Months.
In and ready to start for 11am.

Saturday 8pm - three outstanding poets who are always popular with audiences: Pascale Petit just in from judging the Laurel Prize; the legendary Kit Wright; and winner of most of the big prizes, Hugo Williams. We are in safe hands for an evening of excellent poetry.
It’s all hands on deck for this Saturday’s 11am discussion examining Poet As Icon.
The declarations of a poet were once regarded as inspirational, carrying great weight and wisdom. In some countries, huge crowds turn out to hear poetry being read or declaimed. Why?
Tony Ellis, founder of the King’s Lynn litfest, is retiring from his chairmanship after this weekend. Although he will continue to be involved in future festivals, it’s very much the end of an era. They began in 1985 and, until covid, ran an unbroken series of 71 festivals.
It’s happening this weekend, starting Friday 7pm in this incredible building. If you don’t recognise it, where have been since 1421? It’s the Town Hall on Saturday Market Place. Its name doesn’t do it justice, but our festival does.

Diaries out! The King’s Lynn Poetry Festival starts on Friday 22nd Sept.
Opening the batting on the Friday are poet and translator, Michael Hulse; poetry publisher and writer, John Lucas; Hungarian/Norfolk poet, George Szirtes. Expect an evening filled with brilliance!
Just in time for this weekend’s poetry festival, we have stock of the wonderful new book, written and published by John Lucas (Shoestring Press), A Brief History… of the festivals. It’s available over the weekend, £6, then mail order.
Sorry to report that one of our poets, Nick Drake (Saturday, 3pm), has had to duck out of the festival for reasons beyond anyone’s control. He sends his apologies.
Such a shame - he’s a terrific poet and brilliant writer of all things.
