A California bus driver was shot and killed by a passenger following an argument over a missed stop, authorities say.

Jose Zayas, 55, was arrested Friday in Los Angeles after the shooting in Culver City. Police say the passenger, who was allegedly intoxicated, pulled out a gun and shot the driver.

Zayas was booked on suspicion of murder and is being held on $3 million bail.

A lab built to contain plague may have become the source of the exposure that killed one of its own technicians.

Darya Shipilova, 28, died in Shelekhov after severe pneumonia. Regional reporting says she broke a tube of live Yersinia pestis at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute on 25 September and was hospitalized four days later. Federal authorities later called the cause pneumonia of unknown origin and said no lab accident occurred. Nearly 200 contacts were still placed under observation, several hospitals went into multi-week quarantine, and the local aluminum plant ordered masks.

The gap between those two accounts is the story. Anti-plague institutes exist because natural foci of Y. pestis persist across Siberia and the border regions; their job is surveillance and containment. When a worker at one of them dies of a compatible illness and the response looks like a plague protocol while the official diagnosis does not, the useful question is not the headline. It is whether the exposure was recognized in time, whether contacts were isolated before the pneumonic window, and why the public record and the operational response still do not match.
