I write dread by treating silence as a character.

My quick pass when a scene isn’t tense enough:

• Replace “he heard/they felt” with a concrete cue (a kettle that won’t whistle, a fire that won't stay lit).
• Remove one comfort (light, warmth, a joke that would normally land).
• Add an echo—an image/phrase that returns slightly changed.
• Shorten sentences as the danger nears.

Result: the world acts, the characters react, and the quiet starts to watch back.
