My vision of heaven is Lilanda

I was startled when Guy Scott said in an interview that his vision of heaven was Lilanda. As in Lilanda. The Lilanda of Guy’s memories stands in sharp contrast to mine. I spent my youth trying to escape Lilanda Township. I eventually did, by luck. Yet even today, most of my nightmares are set there.

From what I remember from that interview, what is now Lilanda Township, George Compound, Barlastone Park, Zingalume, and those surrounding areas was one lush, expansive farm belonging to a Mr. Scott, where a young Guy grew up.

I am not sure at what point Lilanda-George exchanged hands to become half township, half slum. What I can tell you with certainty is that my idea of heaven is not Lilanda.

Even so, the Lilanda of my time, 20 years ago, is far from the decay and squalor it is today. I don’t know the full history, but Lilanda had the hallmarks of a township built as a middle-class enclave. The houses, all three-bedroomed, were properly planned, on sizeable plots, and were far more sophisticated and bigger than those in Kabwata, Matero, Chilenje, and such townships. The roads were properly named and tarred. The houses belonged to GRZ; the Zambia Army, Lima Bank, and other parastatals. Lilanda was also where exiled ANC members were housed, including the house opposite ours.

Ownership gradually changed when the FTJ administration started selling the houses to sitting tenants, basically, the staff members who occupied them.

Lilanda had long been on the path of neglect, but it was still decent. The trouble with Lilanda, unlike Kabwata, Matero, or Chilenje, was that its surrounding areas were slums: unplanned, burgeoning, and chaotic—led by George Compound, Tambalala, Desai, Twalumba, and others. It was only a matter of time before Lilanda became a glorified slum, with impassable roads, illegal structures, and squalor.

Fast forward to 2026, Lilanda has become complete in its decay. As much as possible, I avoid going there altogether. I am always triggered by the memories and by the anxiety of knowing that I managed to escape, but not entirely.

My mother bought and bequeathed us our house. So, from time to time, I must go back to Lilanda out of duty to fix things.

However, recently, and inspired by the Square Acre project of developing decent housing in low-income neighbourhoods, we are rethinking and redesigning that property, perhaps as the start of reclaiming Lilanda, one decent house at a time.

To Guy, VP extraordinaire, former Lilanda resident, I do hope that heaven has lived up to your dreams: Lilanda.
