You may prefer to engage with the system by spoiling a vote, that's aligned with your beliefs and values, which are not something to impose upon others.

Many people hold the politicians and system they enable in contempt and refuse to engage. To claim vagueness or laziness is wide of the mark.

In a democracy, the option to fully disengage must exist.

Ultimately, we have to be able to outsmart every future incarnation of AI/AGI/ASI and we can't even do that with current models. There are way too many vectors for true intelligence to circumvent.

My own P(Doom) figure is 50/50 but i am not an expert on AI.

Point is, very few people have a zero value for this.

As apex creatures, we have overpopulated the world, stripped huge amounts of its resources, polluted every eco-system, led to the mass extinction of countless species, change the climate beyond all our historic experience..

..and now produced the complex systems that may lead to our own extinction and certainly economic and other chaos in the years to come.

Maybe we aren't that good at being the apex creature on this planet?

I could make the points that the % is staggeringly low and that more corruption goes on elsewhere, but these are moot points in this context.

Yeah am conscious its the largest element of the "benefits" category.

But one day we will all be claiming our pensions, you can't pull the rug when the deal has been done - at the start of peoples working lives.

I get it, we need to spend more money on defence, but gutting the underlying fabric of the nation is not the way forward.

Ultimately, a bargain is made with people in return for their taxes and NI.

We've got to stop going on about this, its not healthy, government needs to come up with fresh ideas otherwise whats the point in them?

I see it like this - you've got huge numbers under 40 who have had, from their perspective, the rug pulled from under them - housing being a bit issue, everything just deteriorating and then they're told "yeah your remaining safety net needs to be pulled/reduced because Brenda and Brian in their bungalow want you to go fight to protect their interests".

I think many people would struggle to sell this aspirational future.

This "state" has existed for over a thousand years, we have built up a complex, interconnected society - that society is what is purportedly being protected by this primary role.

If the society is largely destroyed, then protecting it seems hardly worth the trouble.

Cutting the bare bones thrown to the poorest is not the way. You think they'll fight for a state which did that to them?
