Apologies for the late notice, but there will be no episode of Get Lit today as it is both Labor Day and my 13th anniversary, and anyhow Matt finds himself occupied with other matters.

We will be finishing As I Lay Dying at our normal time next week.

I am, however, happy to announce that our next book, starting the week of September 21st, will be Germinal by Émile Zola.

Known for its large cast of characters and widely considered Zola's masterpiece, Germinal is the tremendously exciting story of a coal miners' strike in 1870's France, and is probably the most celebrated labor novel ever written.

We will be using the Oxford World's Classics edition, which I recommend if you want to read along, as the history of Zola translations is somewhat checkered, but the quality of the OWC edition is everything you would expect of this august series. As the novel is in 7 parts, I believe we will be reading it for four weeks, with a final episode discussing the novel as a whole.
