The authors also wrote "Even industry insiders acknowledge that many people either don’t read those policies or may not fully understand their opaque language." This is mind-blowing: people openly say this and it's still allowed?!?!?!

In "Your Apps Know Where You Were Last Night, and
They’re Not Keeping It Secret", J. Valentino and Natasha Singer wrote: "..began as a way to customize apps/ target ads...but it has morphed into a data collection and analysis machine."

This is all too true. It's like something out of a SciFi movie. I am terrified for what our future holds in this digital age.

This blow to my self-esteem showed me what was really important and what I should be doing. I think that this article helped me to get my priorities straight, and it was something that helped me power through the turning-off assignment.

In one of the readings for Module 15. titled Are apps becoming a human crutch?, by Howard Gardner and Katie Davis, I learned about the difference between being app-enabled and app-dependent.

This stuck with me the most out of everything that we've done in this class. I've always valued my independence, and I never thought of my attachment to my phone as a dependence. I disliked the term "crutch" because I felt...put down almost.

I'm going to keep my phone on silent and focus on what's in front of me. I'm going to stop scrolling so much through Instagram. It's a waste of time and I should be doing more productive things. I think it will be a great step to better myself.

Turning off was an emotional assignment for me. I was home alone that weekend, and it was very tempting not to sneak onto my devices when no one was looking. This taught me so much, and I've been thinking about what I've learned about myself.
#USFDigitalIdentity#eme4390m2020
Overall, this assignment wasn't enjoyable, but was necessary. An article that we read in classed talked about the difference between "device dependent" and "device enabled", and I know I lean more towards the former. I intend to change that.

I took forever to get to sleep because I spend each night on my phone until I can't keep my eyes open anymore. I resigned to read before bed for a week, because it's scary being so dependent like that.

This is an important phenomenon that I'm certain isn't unique to me. I think how the developers choose to present the game vastly influences how the player interprets the identity of their character and the identity of themselves. (7)

The article "The identity paradox: why game characters are not us, but should be" by Keith Stuart was interesting because, as someone who casually plays video games, the problem of identity has come up often for me. (1)

I think this is because I would much rather be escaping into the world that is the game than actually becoming the character I'm playing. This is because I make the characters do things that I normally wouldn't do, like slay monsters. (6)
#USFDigitalIdentity#eme4390m2020
I'm not as invested in first-person shooter games as I was with Witcher (or Spiderman PS4 now). It's hard for me to make choices for the character if I see them as an extension of myself, instead of a companion that I happen to control. (5)
#USFDigitalIdentity#eme4390m2020
The player takes responsibility for the actions of the character but that doesn't exactly mean that they take responsibility AS the character. In playing "Witcher 3", I found myself addressing them by name, instead of seeing myself as them. (4)
#USFDigitalIdentity#eme4390m2020
For instance, in "Witcher 3", the main character is a monster slayer that travels the world looking for his daughter. The game is mostly based on the dialogue choices of the player, which can steer the game in any direction. (3)
#USFDigitalIdentity#eme4390m2020
This article discussed how a player may link their own identity to a game avatar, and the way that the game is played has a huge influence on that. Third-person and firs-person players have different relationships with their character. (2)
