Postdoc historical and cultural geographer @LeverhulmeTrust, @GeosciencesEd. Interested in transhumance, Viking settlement, place-names, medieval farming.
Reading Marcus Aurelius's 'Meditations'. It never fails to calm and put things in perspective. I need to make the effort to read it at least once every year.
West Cumbria in the 16th century was a simpler place. I just came across a document where a man was charged for calling another a 'Forsworn fellow'. There would be a double loop around the courthouse today.
@Jennifer_Bones and her fantastic work using stable isotope analysis to explore animal-human interactions, and how looking at diet reveals that there are differences between Bronze age, Iron age and Viking farming in the Scottish Islands! @UCLanResearch @UCLanArchAnth#research
Thanks Neil. I am looking forward to this talk on Wednesday night. I'll be talking through some of the ideas in my new book📖 from @RoutledgeHist
This is based on research carried out during my @IrishResearch fellowship @uccarchaeology & developed from my time @ucdarchaeology
Distribution of the ON generic ærgi. The term was one of the few words adopted from Gaelic into ON. It is more likely to have had a similar meaning to the OIr áirge, referring to a dairy shieling, rather than the Scottish Gaelic àirigh with its more generic shieling meaning.

One of the most enlightening bits of data journalism ever. Heat map of scone pronunciation - where it rhymes with gone and with cone. This is why I sometimes feel alone in my London neighbourhood - a lonely scone migrant from the North East. Thanks @infobeautiful @duncanogleskan
@Department_ASNC goes north! The @dindshenchas team is really looking forward to giving a series of inter-related papers on how and why Scotland features in Dindshenchas Érenn and to talking about flaming saints, vomiting fish and journeying Picts in the process. Tues 16 Jan 5.30
Well that's Blue Monday done with for another year.
But what about today and then tomorrow?
