There’s a sudden surge in the promotion and usage of Ozempic on social media, to the extent that people are now casually advertising it on X.

Beauty shops in Ghana are even stocking and administering it to their clients. I hope you’re aware o, @fdaghana?

For those who may not be familiar with the drug: 

1. Ozempic (Semaglutide) is a drug primarily used to manage type 2 diabetes. It functions by increasing insulin secretion (the hormone responsible for reducing blood sugar levels) and reducing glucagon production (the hormone responsible for increasing blood sugar levels), among other mechanisms.

2. The thing about this drug is that, it slows down the passage of food through the stomach, making individuals to feel satisfied or fuller for an extended period. 

3. As a result, they may experience reduced hunger and over time, lose weight. This effect is one of the main reasons why it is being used for weight loss. 

4. In some countries, a higher dose of Semaglutide, sold under brands like 'Ozempic' and 'Wegovy,' is approved for weight management but only in overweight or obese individuals (people with a BMI greater or equal to 27 kg/m2). 

5. Moreover, these individuals must have a comorbid condition such as hypertension, diabetes, or high cholesterol before this drug can be prescribed.

And even that is under strict medical control: it must be prescribed by a doctor, obtained from a licensed pharmacy or hospital and administered under supervision by a pharmacist or doctor.

6. However, the downside is that continued usage of this drug at a high dose can result in stomach paralysis, where the stomach nerves and muscles 'give up,' preventing food from moving into the intestines.

So just imagine eating Banku and it staying in your stomach without progressing through your system. You see? 

7. Somewhere last year, CNN reported that doctors are now witnessing several cases of stomach paralysis in individuals who have been taken Ozempic/Wegovy (both contain semaglutide), raising significant concerns.

8. Another downside is the fact that, it can easily send you into hypoglycemia (very low blood sugar level), which can kill you quickly. 

9. Let me reiterate that, this drug is by prescription only. Your doctor would have to recommend it before you go for it and you don’t just buy from anyone. 

10. Lastly, a beautician or non-pharmacist/doctor does not have any authority or license to give you this, be very careful. If you want to lose weight, go see your dietician and doctor. They’ll tell you exactly what to do.
