GOVERNMENT LAUNCHES FERTILISER DISTRIBUTION TO FARMERS.

The Government has launched the distribution of 173,913 bags of fertiliser to targeted farmers across Uganda, with the goal of restoring soil fertility, boosting productivity and improving household incomes.

The fertiliser, procured from ITRACOM Fertilizers Uganda, will be distributed free of charge to eligible farmers and farmer groups, particularly those involved in strategic value chains such as coffee, tea and cocoa.

Speaking at the launch, Agriculture Minister Hon. Frank Tumwebaze emphasised the importance of using the right inputs, in the right quantities and at the right time, guided by soil testing and agricultural extension services.

MAAIF has also put measures in place to ensure transparency and accountability. The fertiliser will be clearly marked “Government of Uganda – Not for Sale”, and beneficiaries will not be charged.

The intervention is part of Government’s wider effort to move farmers from low productivity subsistence farming to commercial, productive and profitable agriculture.

Ultimately, the success of the programme will be measured by what happens on the farm, better yields, higher incomes and improved livelihoods for Ugandan farmers.

Government has launched the distribution of 173,913 bags of fertiliser to targeted farmers, particularly those engaged in strategic agricultural enterprises including coffee, tea and cocoa, as part of efforts to restore soil fertility, increase productivity and improve household incomes.

The fertiliser, procured by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) from ITRACOM Fertilizers Uganda, will be distributed to eligible farmers at no cost under a Presidential Directive.

Speaking at the launch at MAAIF Headquarters in Entebbe, Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries Hon. @FrankTumwebazek said the intervention is part of Government’s drive to promote precision and evidence-based farming.

“Farmers need to apply the right input, in the right quantity and at the right time if we are to achieve higher productivity and better incomes,” Hon. Tumwebaze said.

MAAIF Permanent Secretary Maj. Gen. David Kasura-Kyomukama said Uganda’s low fertiliser use currently estimated at 2–3 kilogrammes per hectare and declining soil fertility continue to constrain agricultural productivity.

He assured farmers that the distribution will be guided by speed, proximity and accountability, with the fertiliser clearly marked “Government of Uganda – Not for Sale.”

“There will be no fees, no charges and no diversion. These fertilisers are a Government intervention and must reach the farmers for whom they are intended,” he said.

The State Minister for Agriculture, Hon. @DesireMuhooza , said the programme demonstrates Government’s commitment to supporting farmers in strategic value chains and encouraged beneficiaries to work closely with extension workers to ensure proper application.

The launch was also attended by the Minister of State for Fisheries, senior MAAIF officials and other stakeholders.

ITRACOM Fertilizers Uganda, represented by Mr. Bigirimana, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the distribution process and equipping farmers with knowledge on the proper use of fertiliser.

The intervention is expected to contribute to restoring soil fertility, raising agricultural productivity, increasing farmers’ incomes and strengthening Uganda’s food and nutrition security.
