Uganda to Host the 2026 Extraordinary Summit of Africa Union Mission Troop-Contributing Countries in Somalia

Kampala, Tuesday 28 July 2026

The Government of Uganda will host the Extraordinary Summit of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) Troop-Contributing Countries (TCCs) from 29th to 31stJuly 2026 in Kampala.

The event, at Speak Resort Munyonyo, will begin on Wednesday, 29 July with the Chiefs of Defence Forces’ meeting, followed by the Ministers of Defence meeting on Thursday 30 July, and conclude on 31 July, with the Summit of Heads of State and Government.

The summit will be attended by the Heads of State and Government of Troop-Contributing Countries.  They include; Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Egypt, Kenya, Uganda, and Somalia.  

In additional, senior officials from the United Nations, among them the Under-Secretary for Peacekeeping Operations, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia, and the Head of the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) will participate.

The Africa Union will also be represented by the Commission Chairperson, the Commissioner for Peace and Security, and the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia and Head of AUSSOM.  

Furthermore, the Deputy Executive Secretary General of IGAD will attend, reflecting the regional organisation’s vital role in supporting peace and security in Somalia.

The theme for this year’s summit is:``To Sustain the Stabilisation Process in Somalia.``

Uganda is honoured to host this important gathering and reaffirms its unwavering commitment to regional peace, security, and stability under the African Union framework, working closely with the United Nationals, IGAD, and other partners.

Today at State House Entebbe, I welcomed H.E. Moussa Saleh Batraki, Secretary General of the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS). I told him that Africans in the Caribbean and the indigenous peoples of the Pacific are part of our extended African family. I also support the proposal to relocate the OACPS headquarters from Europe, it would strengthen the Organisation’s independence and better reflect the interests of its member states. Uganda is ready to support this effort and deepen cooperation with the OACPS.

Today, I presided over the closure of the 3rd Programme Working Group Meeting for FY 2025/26 on the Innovation, Technology Development and Transfer (ITDT) Programme at Serena Hotel Kampala. This strategic engagement extended far beyond the operational scope of the STI Secretariat, serving as a critical platform for aligning Uganda's multi-sectoral innovation agenda. It brought together senior representatives from key ministries, departments, agencies, and scientific institutions - including MAAIF, MEMD, MoES, MoFA, MoFPED, MoGLSD, MoH, MoIA, MoICT&NG, MoJCA, MoLG, MoLHUD, MoTIC, MoWT, as well as KMC, UIRI, NARO, URSB, UNCST, and UVRI—to review progress, assess strategic priorities, and strengthen institutional collaboration. The exchange of progress reports, policy perspectives, and implementation strategies reaffirmed a fundamental reality: transforming research into scalable, market-ready, homegrown solutions cannot be achieved in isolation. It requires a coordinated national innovation ecosystem in which government, research institutions, academia, and industry work in concert to integrate scientific knowledge, technology, and innovation into national development.

Innovation has evolved from a policy aspiration into a strategic driver of Uganda's socioeconomic transformation and the attainment of a USD 500 billion economy under Vision 2040. Our national competitiveness will depend on our ability to convert indigenous research into commercially viable enterprises, technology into higher productivity, and innovative ideas into industries that create jobs, expand exports, and improve livelihoods. Achieving this ambition demands disciplined execution, evidence-based policy and legislation, sustained investment, and unwavering confidence in Uganda's homegrown ingenuity. By strengthening this integrated, multi-institutional innovation ecosystem, we are not merely improving institutional coordination; we are building a resilient, knowledge-based economy that accelerates inclusive growth, advances technological self-reliance, and positions Uganda as a regional leader in science, technology, and innovation.
