The casual way in which the Notwithstanding Clause is being normalized by provinces like ON and QC is a horrifying development. Its use was always imagined to be rare and accompanied by great stigma. Overriding people's rights should never become a routine political practice.
I’ve got a message for the Premier: scrap your anti-worker legislation, respect workers’ Charter rights, and get back to the bargaining table. #onted#39Kisnotenough#solidarity@CUPEOntario
We will not allow our rights to be legislated away. They may have a majority in the legislature. We have a majority across the province. We will take a stand and do everything we can to defend workers' rights and to defend public education.
I doubt in their wildest dreams the framers of the Charter envisioned a government ever using the notwithstanding provision to impose a contract on low wage earners.
But here we are.
It’s 5am and I’m walking into the House to put students first by pushing back against the Ford govt taking a chainsaw to democratic, Constitutional rights. #onpoli
CUPE are Education SUPPORT workers. Explain to me why such a lowly, disrespected group of individuals have become such a threat to @fordnation and @Sflecce that they were required to use the notwithstanding clause that is only used for dire circumstances? @osbcucscso@waltonmom
A reminder, @fordnation & his complicit MPPs are the most corrupt, misogynist, incompetent gov. They are laughing at Ont as they enjoy their 16.6% raises, $130,000-$180,000+, enhanced benefits, $2300 per month housing allowance, while they destroy HC & education. You are next!
BREAKING: Education workers and the communities that rely on the delivery of their services will not take the Ford Conservatives’ bully tactics, said the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario.

5 a.m. special sitting to fast track a bill to take away the rights of #EducationWorkers in Ontario. "Notwithstanding" the Charter OR Human Rights Code. And above the courts and the law. #onted@osbcucscso@CUPEOntario
The Ontario government recently gave 43 of their MPPs a $16,000 raise, bringing their salary to $132,500/year.
So why are they refusing to provide a decent wage to Ontario’s lowest paid education workers, who make $39,000/year & are just asking for a $3.25/hour raise to survive?
If only this government moved so swiftly on other issues.
Why are education workers rights less important than the right of the people of Ontario or those living in Ottawa?
BTW how is that EA inquiry going Doug?
@ontarioisproud This is terrible news for Ontario, workers and freedom. In order to violate the workers constitutionally guaranteed rights, @fordnation will use the notwithstanding clause AGAIN to violate Ontarians’ rights. Sad day for democracy.
