I have been told that what @wesstreeting said is categorically not the advice he’s been given. The MOD briefing document on this subject was based on Lieutenant General John McColl’s investigation.
So, what’s happened? There are three options:
1. He’s read the brief, and disagreed with it. I spent some of my career in the MOD writing briefs for ministers, including the ‘Line to Take.’ The LtT in this instance would be ‘don’t go there, as the claim that IDF standards are lower than the U.K.’s is factually and demonstrably incorrect.’
2. He’s read the brief, but has ignored it for domestic political reasons
3. He hasn’t had time yet to read the brief, but wanted to position himself in the right place with his constituents from the get-go.
In any of these three scenarios, it’s very bad news for the U.K.
Congratulations to John Healey on his appointment.
He can now ensure the Defence Investment Plan is properly funded. Conservatives will work with him to cut benefits so we can fund defence.
Because we can’t have higher taxes or even more borrowing.
If the rumours are correct and Ed Miliband is indeed Foreign Secretary it will be most nauseating political appointment of my lifetime.
In the summer of 2013, evidence emerged that Bashar al-Assad had used chemical weapons against his own people – crossing what US President Barack Obama had set down as his ‘red line’.
David Cameron sought parliamentary approval for Britain to join limited military action alongside the United States in defence of what he called the longstanding ‘international taboo’ against the use of chemical weapons. Miliband chose instead to whip Labour MPs against the Government – and the motion failed.
Not only was it a day of shame for Britain, it had global impact. Obama feared a repeat in Congress and so backed away. Assad was thus sent a clear signal: butcher your own people with chemical weapons and the West will look the other way.
It also sent a signal to Putin that the West was weak, and he soon after invaded Crimea.
Miliband’s decision to do all he could to block action against Assad is one of the most disgraceful acts of any British politician in living memory.
I hope with all my will that Miliband is nowhere near the FCDO.
Kemi Badenoch is right to seek candidates with serious experience beyond Westminster.
But the Conservative Party must remain a broad church. Requiring agreement on every major issue risks shutting out talented people, narrowing the party’s appeal and making it harder to build the coalition needed to govern.
Adam Boulton currently ranting about Ann Widdecombe being a “spinster” and an “old maid” on @skynews while awaiting a police statement on a potential murder investigation… Just blatant petty misogyny, but it’s deemed “OK” because Widdecombe was a socially conservative Catholic.
“It is for us, the comfortable and the unbombed to carry home what we saw and say it plainly: A country the Kremlin calls "Nazi" is one where soldiers queue to thank a rabbi; where his songs go viral on YouTube; where the Star of David flies on the same flag that marks a city under fire, fighting back.”

@bhatti_saqib MP, Vice Chair of the APPG on Antisemitism, spoke in today’s parliamentary debate on campus Antisemitism.
We were proud to see our work cited during the debate.
You literally condoned it in the tweet below Kemi’s, Zack
You said it was “gut wrenching” that these violent thugs had been jailed and said their violence was just part of “protest”
You are so dishonest you try to deny what you clearly wrote
No word of sympathy in your tweet for the injured police officer, I notice
“I have served in high-level positions in the Oxford Union and have been an active member since I first came to Oxford. There is no doubt that the Union needs to have a serious reckoning with the crisis of anti-Semitism that it has allowed to fester”
