@RachelleGalla15 Hey Rachelle, you are thinking of ‘On the Roundabout’ by @maclavertyB. It’s one of my favourite short stories. The collection it’s from ‘Matters of Life & Death’ is a must-read. The family in the story witness an attempted murder, while driving.
I’m off to Northern Ireland tomorrow! Stopping by @WatBallymena and @WaterstonesCole!
Also taking a trip to Belfast to visit @NOALIBISBOOKS - my first ever visit. Some of my favourite authors wax lyrical about this shop, and it’s an INDIE, so I’m very excited about it!!
Bernard MacLaverty’s Lamb (1980) begins in a Home for boys run by christian brothers. One of the youngest brothers, Michael Lamb, is horrified by the place & when he inherits some money, he leaves, taking with him 12-year-old Owen Kane.
Thanks to @fotoole for the info.
Did you know that Alasdair Gray was an ethical employer?
He paid his assistants the same rate of pay as himself, £15 per hour, with often excess funds in his account from awards/commissions being donated to charity.

@IndieLiterary@thiwurd@maclavertyB I had to leave before the end, and I was so sad to miss him, one of my favourite writers. And readers. He can show us all a thing or two about writing AND reading aloud.
Thinking back to the Oct 2023 @thiwurd event when final performer @maclavertyB read the title story from his magnificent collection ‘Walking the Dog’, before finishing with one-pager ‘On the Art of the Short Story’ from the same collection. A stunning & fitting reading #Stories
Travelled from Bristol for this @thiwurd event. Worth it to hear @maclavertyB read. About 150 folks in venue and you could've heard a pin drop. Very special literary and musical event. Well done to everyone who put it on. Will be back to Glasgow for next one #thiwurd
@Jude_Maclaverty @maclavertyB Loved this film, and Cal too. Your dad is such a beautiful writer. Thanks for giving us the chance to watch it again & reminding me I also have this on my bookshelf!
A shot of the great @maclavertyB reading at our event on 14th Oct during a brilliant, intense & timely reading of his classic short story ‘Walking the Dog’ #thiwurd
Today marks the start of the
Mòd @NationalMod in Paisley. This is the premier Gaelic festival and to mark it we wanted to share this great portrait Alasdair made of his good friend and Gaelic poet Aonghas MacNeacail in 1984. Highly recommend reading his work…
