When someone tells me they are waiting on a miracle, in a clinical situation, don’t assume you know what that means. Ask the next question, “What does a miracle look like to you?”. You will often be surprised.
#medtwitter & #meded folx - how are you planning out burnout prevention in your trainees in peak burnout season? January and February, especially in the #midwest & #northeast, can be brutal! Do you make changes in programming? Morale boosters? Open to ideas!
@PalliativeMedMD@rabob@PalliDad@langmannga@PittHPMfellows@UPMCMercyIM @AnnaLewis312 @tammyeaton17 Also a gr8 chance to use some of those NURSE statements, esp respect - acknowledge their desire to protect patient from harm and suffering, acknowledge how difficult this news must be for family too. And if someone tells you ‘it’s fine’ and you know you haven’t gotten it right, ask them again and try it again. Odds are they’ve spent their entire life trying to make their own name less difficult for other people. Not their job, and it’s not ‘fine’.
Every name, no matter how difficult it may be for you, is someone’s heritage, culture, history, identity. Take the time to learn it. If you need to ask a hundred times, do it. And if you’re teaching faculty, don’t you dare let it go. It’s someone’s humanity at stake. #DEI
one thing I didn't expect to tire me out in residency was introducing myself to staff. I always say my full name & pronounce it slowly (it's hard to say & that's ok!) but I never expected responses of "that's gross" "I can't say that" "you should change it for
patients"
@swethamaddipudi I’m so sorry you are experiencing this. Kudos to your bravery in continuing to stand proud. Telugu names aren’t always easy! I stand with you.
