The Majestic Throne of Princess Sitamun: A Glimpse Into Ancient Egyptian Royalty and Artistry ...
During the glorious 18th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt, a stunning wooden throne was crafted for Princess Sitamun, epitomizing the artistry and mastery of Egyptian craftsmanship from over three millennia ago. This remarkable piece of furniture, made from luxurious red wood, serves as a testament to the unparalleled skill of ancient woodworkers.
The throne features an intricate veneer, just 4 mm thick, of the same opulent wood, adding an additional layer of elegance to its design. Its legs, shaped to resemble powerful lion’s paws, stand proudly on elevated bases adorned with detailed ridges. Originally, these regal paws were embellished with silver plating, with remnants still visible today, offering a glimpse into its once-glorious appearance.
Princess Sitamun, whose name means "daughter of Amun," lived around 1370 BC and was the daughter of the powerful Pharaoh Amenhotep III and his principal wife, Queen Tiye. Though much about her life remains mysterious, inscriptions reveal that she ascended to the role of queen consort in the 30th year of her father’s reign, marrying him during his first Heb-sed festival.
Her royal status is further highlighted by her residence in the grand Malqata palace near Thebes. Archaeological finds, including jar labels, reference her as "The House of the King’s Daughter, Sitamun," underscoring her esteemed position within the royal family.
For centuries, this magnificent throne lay hidden in the sands of the Valley of the Kings, a silent witness to Princess Sitamun’s legacy. It was only in 1905, during excavations led by Theodore M. Davis, that the throne was rediscovered in the tomb of Yuya and Tjuyu (KV46). Today, it stands as a remarkable relic of ancient Egyptian royalty, showcasing both the artistry and the mysterious history of this extraordinary civilization.
