Why Madman With A Classroom?
It’s a tag I chose over a decade ago now inspired by the original ‘Madman With A Box’
What does he,now she, have to do with education?
@seanrobertgill@billdavidsoniii @robyn_pinilla Which is why I would guess there may be some personal health issue or perhaps family and the teacher might be due some grace.
@heymrsbond When I time and effort I put in burns me down so much that I’m too tired for my own son without even the silver lining of good pay to benefit him.
If you’re not looking at any and every possibility to increase planning time for teachers, you’re going to need to get ready to try to fill a lot of positions in the coming years.
It’s absurd to expect teachers do their job at a high level with so little planning time.
I’m not so convinced that simply moving experienced teachers to the highest needs schools would get the results we want.
I’ve seen the amount of effort young teachers bring to their work in these schools.
It’s not something that most mid/late career teachers are willing to do
Talking to me co worker about the laughable idea of our SPED teachers “working to rule”. He was telling me about his evening plans and the 3 hrs of paperwork he would need to complete.
What teachers of special education are asked to do is off the charts hard. I think it’s bonkers that differentiated pay scales for SPED aren’t more common in contracts.
There’s a reason why it’s typically the hardest teaching positions to fill.
Time and time again in the #SustainableTeaching survey, teachers shared that they did not have enough time to complete basic responsibilities. I'm sure there are opportunities for teachers to be more efficient, but the reality is that teachers have far too many responsibilities.
If we want to create writers in our classrooms, they need to WRITE.
This means that sometimes they will write things incorrectly, or maybe even *gasp* misspell words.
If we chase perfection, we will not create writers. We will cultivate a fear of writing.
I am constantly asking myself what it means to live a good life. I find that consistent curiosity has made all the difference in how I view schools and education.
