Men of this era face a strange predicament.

For generations, one of the deepest instincts of a man has been to provide and protect... Not because the people he loves are incapable or weak. But because he feels responsible for what happens to them.

He worries about his ageing parents/grandparents.. Worries about his wife. Worries about his children.

He loves his son and daughter equally... Wants both of them to be fearless, independent and free.

But when his young daughter asks, "Why can't I go alone just like my brother? Why can't I come back late? Why do you worry so much?" he faces a dilemma that is difficult to explain.

Because he knows something she will understand more fully with age.

The world as it ought to be and the world as it is are not always the same place.

We have built a world calling it civilisation... but we have not eliminated violence, predation, cruelty or exploitation.

WE ARE STILL ANIMALS.

So sometimes a father says no.

Sometimes he insists on accompanying her.

Sometimes he waits awake until she reaches home.

Sometimes he makes himself unpopular.

And today, such protectiveness can quickly be given labels. Controlling, conservative, patriarchal.

Certainly, control should never disguise itself as protection... A daughter is not property... A wife is not subordinate. Women are not intellectually weaker than men. And love does not confer ownership over another person's life.

But the opposite mistake is also possible.

Not every boundary is oppression... Not every precaution is patriarchy... And not every act of protection is control.

Perhaps civilisation will someday reach a point where fathers no longer have reason to worry when their daughters walk home alone at midnight.

WE ARE NOT THERE YET.

Until we are, men should never apologise for caring for his family.

And when circumstances genuinely demand it, have the strength to stand between the people you love and the dangers of an imperfect world.

And if the world calls that old fashioned?

Let it.

BE A MAN.

Accept the burden.
Accept the responsibility.
Accept that sometimes you will be misunderstood.

Don't be afraid to be unpopular.

Popularity is temporary... Duty is not.
