-- 229,000 pothole repairs (up 27% from last year)
-- speedbump installations up 25%
-- tree planting up 61% (55,000 total)
-- bus lanes installation more than doubled (5.5 miles to 12 miles)
-- residential curbside collection met its annual target for the first time in 21 years (with three months to spare)
-- affordable housing completions up 20%
-- financed 2,546 supportive housing units and 4,742 affordable homes for formerly homeless New Yorkers, the most in a fiscal year in NYC history
-- job placements through the city's human resources agency are up 33%
-- youth job placements through city admin up 26%
-- wait times for primary care appointments down 31% for adults and 24% for children
-- families receiving child welfare services up 16%
-- rec center membership up 13% (total membership highest in 15 years)
-- young adult attendance at rec centers up 50%
-- murder rate is down 20%
-- burglaries down 9%, robberies down 9%, auto thefts down 7%

Having spent most of my adult life in the Air Force, military issues remain near and dear to my heart. Here are a couple that ought to be of concern to all regardless of party affiliation.

Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll has resigned. I met Driscoll back in 2020 when he and I both ran for Congress in NC 11. There were a couple of events during the primary stage where Democratic and Republican candidates were invited. I was the only Veteran among the five Democratic contenders and Driscoll was the only Veteran among the dozen Republicans. We spoke briefly and he seemed to be the most competent and practical of the Republican lot.

I won the Democratic primary and Driscoll finished sixth on the Republican side, trailing both Lynda Bennett and Madison Cawthorn. Cawthorn went on to win in a runoff with Bennett, and you know what an embarrassment he became. After losing to Cawthorn in the runoff, Bennett was convicted of a felony for violating campaign finance rules. So, when I say Driscoll was the most competent and practical of the Republicans, keep in mind that his competitors resembled the barroom scene in Star Wars.

From all reports, Driscoll was perhaps the most competent and practical person Trump appointed to any position. Again, the Star Wars barroom scene definitely applies to Trump’s appointees. And competent and practical are not favored traits in a Pentagon run by former Fox News host Pete Hegseth.

The significance of Driscoll’s resignation is highlighted in this passage from an article in The Atlantic:

“Hegseth’s purge of the military has been so dramatic that with Driscoll gone, the military’s largest service is left without a top civilian leader, a Senate-confirmed top general, a confirmed Army general in charge of operations, or a confirmed commander of Army troops in Europe. Because of all the firings across the service over the past year, the Army, with more than 450,000 active-duty soldiers positioned across the globe, has fewer generals than at any point in recent history. Driscoll’s personal appeal to Trump just days before his exit was the most direct articulation of high-level concerns among Pentagon leaders about the strains facing the force—including Hegseth’s intervention in Army personnel decisions and the mounting demands of the Iran war.”

There have been rumors that Hegseth’s Pentagon days are numbered, and Driscoll’s name was high on the list as a potential replacement. In any event, there’s no legitimate way to spin Driscoll’s departure from his post as Secretary of the Army in a positive light. The men and women who’ve raised their hands to serve the nation deserve better.

On a different note, Libby Klinner is the widow of Major Alex Klinner who died in March when his KC-135 tanker crashed in western Iraq while supporting combat operations in Iran. Since then, Libby Klinner has been getting the runaround from the military over benefits for herself and her three children because the war with Iran is not an officially declared war.

You may recall that to avoid having to get congressional approval for his war that he doesn’t want to call a war, Trump has labeled the use of the U.S. Armed Forces to inflict kinetic damage on Iran as a conflict or a skirmish. I suppose anyone who can call the domestic terrorists assault on the U.S. Capitol just a group of patriotic tourists visiting their elected representatives then calling dropping bombs, lobbing missiles, and blockading a country something other than a war is no big stretch.

But Trump’s semantic sleight of hand to evade Congress’s constitutional war powers has real world consequences for the families of those he’s sent into harm’s way. It’s tragic that Libby Klinner lost her husband and her three children lost their father. That tragedy is amplified by the unnecessary grief she’s had to endure because we have a president who thinks he’s a king and subject to no constraints and a congress too impotent to perform its constitutional duties.
