Lexical search helps when the exact wording is part of the meaning.

Technical documentation has a lot of the second kind.

query → vector search → top K

to roughly:

query → vector + lexical search → rank fusion → candidates

2/ Exact identifiers were the easiest place to see it.

Part numbers, error codes, model numbers, acronyms, etc.

Sometimes the “less semantically similar” chunk was the useful one because it contained the exact identifier.

1/ One thing we ran into while working on RAG for technical docs:

Vector search can find something that's semantically very close to the question...

and still miss the result you actually wanted near the top.
