The “brother protecting sister” idea is often just brothers' control over their sisters' lives. Under that excuse, brothers can restrict their sisters, make decisions for them, and interfere in things that should be their own choice. Everything gets justified as protection.
Privilege and luck play a huge role in whether you survive our healthcare system.
Bias and misogyny are rampant and frequently cost people their lives.
A surgical complication almost killed me when I was 24.
Luck, privilege and a 22 year old boy saved my life.
I’m disabled and I’m sick of the current rhetoric against disabled people 👇
We’re vilified as lazy, scroungers who fake our disabilities because we’re workshy.
Headlines scream that we steal from hardworking taxpayers or scamming the government into giving us free designer cars.
Our diagnoses are challenged by politicians and strangers online. We’re told our illnesses aren’t real disabilities or that we don’t try hard enough. We’re a welfare bill, not people.
Hacks without any experience of disability telling us don’t try hard enough. Comment pieces belittling our suffering, dismissing us as malingerers.
Some people even go as far as demanding that disabled people are locked up or worse, culled.
And yet no-one asks disabled people what it is like to be us. The moment we have opinions, we’re shut down and hounded.
The moment we no longer serve as inspiration porn, they want us gone.
An inclusive future cannot exist without disability justice. It's about building a world rooted in collective care, interdependence, leadership, and liberation, so no body or mind can be left behind. Saying bye to another #DisabilityPrideMonth, let's keep choosing that future ✨
By the way, if you're in need of a therapist who is disabled and understands ableism and you live anywhere in California or Nevada, I have some spots available. You can schedule a consultation on my website, https://t.co/JK7blHvGAv. 🫶🏻
There's a huge myth that a ton of people are faking sickness for some social/financial benefit, but the reality is that most disabled/chronically ill people are actually pretending to be less disabled than they really are because that's what society wants.
PWDs are as much a part of society as anyone else. We're artisans, lawyers, business leaders, students, and everything in between.
What holds us back isn't disability. It's the barriers that stop us from participating on equal terms.
Here are some disabled thinkers and doers!
Our Founder, @saysnidhigoyal, has spent years challenging assumptions about disability – one barrier, one room, and one conversation at a time. This is your sign to ignore anyone who's ever told you, “you can't." ✨
Disability is not bad, but ableism sure is.
Wondering how to support your disabled friends and peers?
Start here: Don't shy away from disability, and rage against the lack of access that stops us from going to the same restaurants as you, (1/2)
If you've ever wondered what navigating an inaccessible world feels like...@saysnidhigoyal has summed it up rather well 😭 Have you got nightmares of your own? Drop them in the replies 👇🏽
#Horrific A Brahmin man named Jitendra Pathak brutally murdered a 1.5 year old child and no mainstream media outlet raised its voice, the reason is caste. 🔥🔥
