As someone who is a researcher this whole situation is laughable. I am a neurobiology researcher, yet I am author on papers outside pure biology because my work contributed to the research question. That is how research works.

Authorship is based on contribution, not job title. Standard authorship guidelines state that anyone who contributes substantially to the conception, design of the research, interpretation, or manuscript development deserves authorship. Notice what’s not listed is “Must hold a degree in every discipline touched by the paper.”

The paper in question studies a music-based therapy program for children and adolescents with autism. Yoongi contributed through his own field of expertise: music. He shared ideas from the early planning stages, helped shape the musical framework used in the program, and participated in pilot sessions.

Every component of a research matters. If the research uses music, then the person contributing to the musical structure of that research is contributing.

Interdisciplinary research works like this. People contribute where their expertise is relevant to the project. Not every contributor has the same academic background, and they are not expected to.

But by all means, non-researchers should continue explaining academic authorship criteria based on vibes rather than established scholarly standards. It is certainly… illuminating.
