What Monaco did with Camara is genuinely difficult to defend — not only from a competence standpoint, but from an ethical one.

They had agreed a €55m deal with Chelsea.

Camara had completed his medical. His contract had been agreed. The paperwork was virtually finished. He was preparing to fly to London tomorrow to begin his new life.

For all practical purposes, everyone involved had been allowed to proceed on the understanding that the transfer was happening.

Then, at the last possible moment, Everton returned for Folarin Balogun.

At that point Monaco had every right to decide that selling Balogun was preferable to selling Camara. That's football. Circumstances change and clubs are entitled to make decisions in their own interests.

What I cannot understand — or defend — is what happened next.

Rather than completing the virtually guaranteed €55m Camara deal while simultaneously exploring Balogun, Monaco pulled the plug on Camara to pursue the significantly less certain alternative.

Worse, they apparently wouldn't even agree to an extension deal sheet for Camara.

That meant they weren't simply delaying Chelsea while trying to complete Balogun. They were actively removing the safety net of a deal that had already progressed to the point of medicals, contracts and final paperwork — all to gamble on another transaction that wasn't completed.

And then Balogun's move collapsed.

So Monaco went from potentially selling Camara AND Balogun, or at the very least having the certainty of €55m for Camara, to selling neither.

From Monaco's perspective, that's horrendous risk management.

But Chelsea have every right to be absolutely furious about how they've been treated as well.

Chelsea negotiated in good faith. They agreed the fee Monaco wanted. They agreed a contract with the player. They organised and completed his medical. Their staff and lawyers spent deadline day completing the necessary documentation on the reasonable understanding that Monaco intended to honour the agreement they had reached.

You cannot reasonably expect another club to commit that amount of time, money and resources to completing a transfer, allow the player to organise his life around that transfer, get to the finishing line and then suddenly decide: "Actually, we've got another idea."

Perhaps Monaco were legally entitled to do it. Legal entitlement and ethical behaviour aren't the same thing.

And the person I feel worst for is Camara.

Forget Chelsea's wasted hours and Monaco's financial incompetence for a moment.

This is a human being who had agreed his contract, completed his medical and was preparing to fly to London tomorrow to start the next chapter of his life.

Imagine mentally saying goodbye to your club, preparing to move country, arranging your life around London and believing your transfer is effectively complete — only to be told at the last moment that your club has cancelled it because another player might be sold instead.

And then that player isn't sold either.

Monaco haven't just spectacularly mismanaged their own deadline day.

They've treated Chelsea terribly, they've treated Camara terribly, and they've managed to achieve the worst possible outcome for themselves in the process.

Chelsea should be furious.

Camara should be furious.

And if I were a Monaco supporter or board member wondering how a desperately needed, virtually completed €55m sale somehow became €0, I'd be asking some extremely serious questions about who made that decision.
