After a month-long forced hiatus, likely triggered by a coordinated cyberattack, we’re back.

Our account was mass reported and automatically flagged by X for allegedly violating its “private media” policy - not at the time of the original reporting, which was in February, but only recently. This strongly suggests that a targeted reporting campaign was launched to trigger X’s automated violation systems.

The post in question covered a video by Kuwaiti-Palestinian influencer Rawan Bin Hussain, in which she alleged she had a short relationship with Areen - a situation she said caused her serious legal troubles in the UAE, where she resides.

We are aware that Areen has hired a top UK-based cybersecurity firm that specializes in orchestrating coordinated mass reporting operations to exploit automated moderation systems.

Our reporting did not violate the “private media” policy. The video was publicly posted by Rawan, who has more than 7 million Instagram followers, and Areen is a public figure. No private information was shared, no doxxing occurred, and the story is clearly in the public interest given the prominence of both individuals.

However, Areen and his father are notoriously sensitive about this issue and have reportedly spent significant sums to suppress any coverage that objectively reports on it. They are also exploiting X’s increasingly weak content moderation capacity. Since most of its trust and safety team has been gutted, appeals can take months to process, making it easy for coordinated reporting campaigns to go unchecked. This creates a loophole that actors like the firm hired by Areen know how to exploit to trigger wrongful takedowns.

We’ll share more details soon. This is not just about one story - it’s about how even so-called decentralized platforms can be effectively suppressed by the powerful ruling families using wealth and coordinated influence campaigns.

We want to make one thing clear: we have no personal issues with Areen or any other individual. Our reporting is guided solely by the public interest. Understanding the actions and influence of those who shape power in the region is essential for serious journalism. Incidents like this will not turn us into partisan actors targeting him or anyone else - nor will they make us self-censor out of fear of cyberbullying. We will continue to report on Areen and every stakeholder objectively and fairly.

At the same time, we are taking steps to protect ourselves from similar attacks in the future, including diversifying the platforms where we publish, so we can keep reporting on the region independently and without intimidation.
