Hanna Bisharat, a visionary, constructed this Jerusalem home in 1926, creating a haven for his extended family. However, during the Nakba, their lives were upended, and they were forced to leave.
In an unexpected twist, this historic house found a new occupant in Golda Meir … who made it hers. The Prime Minister of the Israeli government had claimed that Palestine was an empty land without people …
This is a space where history and lives became intricately entwined, where the aspirations of one family were unjustly replaced by the fate of another, all due to the harsh realities of force and injustice.
Hanna Bisharat is the grandfather of my dear friends Ali and Rana Assem Salam, who carry forward his enduring spirit and connection to this remarkable house, even from very far. It stands as a testament to the inexplicable bonds that tie us to our past, to the people who once called it home, and to the echoes of their experiences that still resonate within its foundations. Nobody can change history.
