MLS thought they were ripping off David Beckham. That mistake is now worth $475 million.

In 2007, Toronto had just paid $10 million for an expansion franchise. Beckham's contract gave him the right to buy one for $25 million, 2.5x the going rate. The league believed it was selling him an overpriced option. He believed he was buying a call option on American soccer. Both sides thought they won the negotiation.

MLS made two drafting mistakes. The option had no expiration date. And the price was fixed, with no adjustment for league growth. Beckham could wait as long as he wanted while expansion fees climbed, then exercise at 2007 prices.

So he waited 7 years. By 2014, expansion fees had reached $70 million. He exercised at $25 million and picked Miami. Somewhere in between, MLS called and offered $50 million to buy the clause back. That phone call was the league admitting it had mispriced its own product.

Then the market finished the job. St. Louis paid roughly $200 million to enter in 2023. San Diego's owners paid $500 million. That's half a billion dollars for the exact asset Beckham's contract priced at $25 million.

The best trade of Beckham's life happened before he played a single MLS game. It was buried in a player contract, and the counterparty drafted it.
