The Chinese aircraft carrier *Liaoning* has managed to evade tracking by U.S. and Japanese forces, making a surprise entry into the heart of the Philippine archipelago—marking the first time a Chinese Navy aircraft carrier has entered the high seas within the Philippine island chain.
Recently, the *Liaoning* departed from a naval base in the Northern Theater Command, transited the Miyako Strait into the Western Pacific, and then turned south, unexpectedly passing through the Bashi Strait to enter the South China Sea. Just as observers assumed the *Liaoning* was heading to the South China Sea to rendezvous with the aircraft carrier *Fujian*, it executed a tactical feint: moving further south through the Mindoro Strait into the Sulu Sea, then continuing southeast through the Basilan Strait into the Celebes Sea—accompanied by its entire escort fleet. This maneuver serves as a clear warning to anti-Chinese factions within the Philippines.
Currently, the *Liaoning* has moved from the Celebes Sea eastward into the Western Pacific, positioning it within reach of the Palau archipelago and Guam. Alternatively, it could continue southward through the Makassar Strait toward the Java Sea and the Banda Sea. Should it do so, it would set a new milestone for the operational reach of a Chinese Navy carrier strike group—extending its presence deep into the South Pacific.
Lula has won. What a joy, what a relief, what a stunning victory!
The stakes were extremely high.
For Brazil’s democracy: Flávio Bolsonaro promised to rewrite the 1988 Constitution, overhaul the judiciary and go after the Supreme Court that convicted his father.
For Brazil’s working class: a Bolsonaro government would mean austerity, deregulation and an attack on the gains of the last four years, from Brazil’s exit from the UN Hunger Map to the abolition of the six-day working week.
For the planet: under Lula, Amazon deforestation has more than halved. Bolsonaro promised agribusiness and mining a free hand.
For Latin America: seven far-right candidates have won presidential elections in the region in 18 months, with the overt backing of Washington. Brazil would have been the biggest prize yet for the Donroe Doctrine.
For the world: Brazil is a founding member of BRICS, a consistent voice for peace and multipolarity, and an opponent of genocide in Gaza. A Bolsonaro government would have signed up to Trump’s Shield of the Americas, and aligned Brazil with the US and Israel against Palestine, Iran, Russia, China and the Global South.
What turned things around between the first and second rounds? More than anything: mass mobilisation. The left went into the streets and fought. Trade unions, students, social movements and oppressed groups mobilised on a scale not seen for years, with street rallies, door-knocking, and a concerted push to reach the more than 30 million Brazilians who didn’t vote three weeks ago.
The government also gave them something concrete to fight for, with legislation ending the six-day work week and providing debt relief for families. It became abundantly clear that the choice facing voters was between, on the one hand, workers’ rights, sovereignty and democracy; and on the other, austerity, Trump and the militias.
The mobilisation of the last few weeks offers important clues on how to sustain this victory. Progressive forces will have to stay organised, stay vigilant, and remain on the streets to defend the result, defend the Constitution, and push the government forward against a hostile Congress and Senate.
Meanwhile, it’s pretty obvious that the PT and its allies must work to rebuild their mass base. A party founded in the factories of São Paulo now has to deepen its efforts to adapt to a 21st-century economy; to organise app drivers, delivery riders, informal workers and young people, and contest the spaces where a well-funded far right has been building its influence. The election victory is huge, but it won’t mean much if the left doesn’t work to expand popular power.
Parabéns, Lula. Parabéns, o povo brasileiro! May this victory be the beginning of a new era for Brazil.
ISRAEL’S PRIME MINISTER Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday warned that the country would be destroyed by a pair of nuclear bombs in “a second holocaust” if he doesn’t win today’s election—as he shared an AI image of Tel Aviv being nuked.
He did not tell voters that only one country in the region has a secret and thoroughly illegal arsenal of nuclear weapons, and that is Israel itself.
Netanyahu also appeared to trivialize accusations about the killings by the Israeli Defence Forces that have shocked the world, referring to “some foolish, insignificant blood libel storm”.
.
TRUMP’S EAR
In a letter he publicized on x with the image, he crowed about his secret weapon: the fact that he has Trump’s ear.
“Finishing the job” of protection against a planned nuclear attack “won't happen with a prime minister who can't pick up the phone and have a continuous, intimate conversation with Trump,” he said.
Netanyahu called for the support of voters as crucial to life itself, saying that the people who will not vote for a rival candidate are “Anyone who cares about their own physical existence, that of their family, and their loved ones…”
.
ATTACKER NOT VICTIM
While Israel always presents itself as victim, it has in fact attacked multiple communities in recent years: Iran, Palestine (Gaza and the West Bank), Syria, Lebanon, Qatar, and Yemen.
Israel’s military operations are largely paid for by the United States, but Tel Aviv also gets massive help from Germany (military equipment and ammunition); and the United Kingdom (intelligence and jet-bomber components). Canada and Australia also have political and supply chain ties with Israel.
In all the above countries, the public opposes the provision of support to Israel, but are largely ignored by people in power, for unclear reasons.
In recent months, India too has been supplying military tech, drones and rockets to Netanyahu’s armed forces.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, who boasted of supplying Israel with vast quantities of ammunition as its bombs tore Gaza’s children apart, has fallen from power.
Another shameless accomplice in Israel’s genocide belongs in history’s dustbin.

Kick-ass Brazilians won against the Mother of All Hybrid Wars.
That was only the opening shot.
The criminal dynastic clan is already contesting the election result.
The Sociopath-in-Chief will also contest it.

"The US makes demands and Taiwan gives in."
Not my words. Chiu Chih-shien's, a Taiwanese man, speaking on Retrocession Day.
Look at the last two years and tell me he is wrong.
> TSMC pushed to build in Arizona
> tariff threats on Taiwanese chips
> arms paid for up front, delivered years late
> pork with ractopamine forced onto the market
> a special defence budget written to Washington's wish list
And every time, the DPP calls it "partnership".
A partner can say no. Taipei never does.
Chiu says many people in Taiwan "feel uneasy". Of course they do. They can see the island being turned into a forward base, paid for by them, run by someone else.
That is not friendship. That is vassal management.
