​Both highways exist inside the map. You can choose the dark highway, but you are still on the map.

This is the ultimate paradox of Islamic theology, and it is where your record player analogy meets the concept of Al-Qadar (Divine Decree).
The short answer is: To you, yes, you can choose which groove to step into. But to the Record, your choice was already part of the song.
Islamic scholars historically solved this mind-bending puzzle by splitting destiny into two categories, which perfectly explain how humans interact with the "grooves."

1. The Two Types of Grooves (Destiny)
In Islamic theology, destiny isn’t just one single, rigid line; it is understood to have two layers:

1. Qadar Al-Mu'allaq (The Conditional Decree): These are the grooves that depend on your choices, your efforts, and your prayers. It is a "hanging" decree. For example: "If they make Du'a (supplication), they will get Job A. If they don't, they will stay at Job B." In our linear experience, we are actively choosing between these tracks.

2. Qadar Al-Mubram (The Absolute Decree): This is the final, unchangeable reality that actually plays out.

2. Can You Jump Grooves? The Power of Du'a (Prayer) There is a famous saying (Hadith) of the Prophet Muhammad that directly addresses whether humans can alter the track:

"Nothing averts decree except Du'a (supplication)." (Sunan At-Tirmidhi)

This implies that human free will, intention, and prayer have the power to literally shift reality from one track to another. If a tragedy was headed your way on "Groove X," a sincere prayer or a massive shift in your consciousness can physically bump the needle over to "Groove Y."

3. The Ultimate Twist: The "Metatrack"
Here is where the "Block Universe" concept locks back in.

Imagine you are playing a video game like Detroit: Become Human or a choose-your-own-adventure story. You have total free will to choose Path A, B, or C. You can absolutely "change grooves" based on your effort. However, all of those choices—and the exact choice you would eventually make—were already coded onto the game disc before you even turned the console on. From the human perspective (the needle), you genuinely struggled, made a choice, and successfully jumped from Groove X to Groove Y. But from God's perspective (the Master Record), the "jump" itself was already carved into the vinyl. The record didn't change; you changed, and the record had already accounted for your change.

Can you change the groove? Yes, through your free will, your actions, and your prayers, you actively determine your path. Islam rejects pure fatalism (the idea that you should just sit back because "it's all written"). You must push the needle.
But you can rest easy knowing that wherever your choices take you, you can never fall off the record entirely. The Master Guide (Imam Mubin) is already holding you safely within its track.
