For three years the father of my two sons, and Pakistan’s former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, has been brutally penalised by his political opponents, in a personal vendetta by Army Chief, Asim Munir,  which according to the UN,  amounts to torture and which  is now taking a potentially fatal toll on his physical and mental health. 

He has endured 3 years of solitary confinement. For nearly ten months now his family has been denied contact with him. He has been deprived of the most basic human contact, denied access to books, lawyers and doctors.

The international human-rights standards are unequivocal. Under the UN’s Nelson Mandela Rules, solitary confinement lasting more than 15 consecutive days is prohibited and amounts to torture.

He has endured this treatment not for 15 days, but for three years.

Pakistan’s own Supreme Court has now intervened: ordering comprehensive  medical treatment, access to his personal doctor, regular family visits and twice-weekly calls with his sons.

Yet those orders are being defied.

This is no longer simply a Pakistani political matter. It is a human-rights emergency.

He has deep and lifelong ties to Britain. He studied at Oxford University, captained Oxford University cricket and spent years playing county cricket in England. His relationship with this country stretches back more than half a century. His charitable activities were internationally recognised, and  include building the only free cancer hospital in Pakistan as well as a university.

His sons, my two boys, Sulaiman and Kasim, are British citizens. They have been forced to watch their father’s health decline from thousands of miles away, prevented from visiting him, denied visas, publicly threatened by government officials with arrest themselves, and even denied court-mandated regular phone calls. 

I have repeatedly appealed to the UK government to intervene. Purported attempts at back channelling have evidently failed. The previous Foreign Secretary @DavidLammy informed me in writing that Britain would not  intervene if my sons, British citizens, are arrested when they travel to Pakistan to visit their father. 

@FCDOGovUK: Britain must now speak out publicly and unequivocally. Demand that Pakistan comply with its own Supreme Court;  restore Imran Khan’s medical access, his right to see his family, end his prolonged isolation and uphold his fundamental human rights.

Pakistan is a Commonwealth country. Britain has a long and proud tradition of standing against arbitrary detention, inhumane treatment and the denial of fundamental rights. Those principles mean very little if we invoke them only selectively and neglect them when inconvenient.
This an appeal to the new Burnham government  to please now do the right thing.

What went wrong in Zurich today?

U.S.–Iran negotiations stalled before they could begin following Trump’s reckless threats towards Iran. Also, along with Trump, JD Vance, in his opening remarks, also went on the offensive. He declared the Strait of Hormuz was open, that Iran’s nuclear program was finished, and threatened Iran with the possibility of renewed U.S. military action if not for Trump’s diplomatic efforts.

This is not how negotiations are conducted. The Strait of Hormuz is closed for obvious reasons: Israeli barbarism in Lebanon. When you negotiate, you engage in dialogue with mutual respect, acknowledge concerns, and work towards practical resolutions.

Iranian negotiators are already under heavy pressure at home. The clergy/IRGC support base in Iran is already labeling them traitors for defying Iran’s Supreme Leader’s 10-point framework, which includes a tougher stance on the nuclear program. Instead of treading carefully, Trump and the U.S. chose to humiliate the Iranian negotiators, effectively strengthening the IRGC/clergy camp. Under these conditions, there is no realistic path for talks to proceed. The negotiators would face political backlash at home, where they are already struggling.

If Trump and the U.S. want a peace deal to move forward and progress on the MoU, they need to create a conducive environment for Iranian negotiators, understand the internal dynamics in Iran, acknowledge the core issues at play, and work towards a mutual resolution.

What happened today (even if talks still take place) strengthens the position of hardliners in Iran and weakens the hand of the negotiators.

Abbas Araghchi: “Why We Insist on Uranium Enrichment”

“Why have we insisted, and continue to insist, on uranium enrichment? Why won’t we surrender it, even under the threat of war? Because no one has the right to dictate what we may or may not possess. This is rooted in a fundamental principle: the rejection of domination.

Enrichment is our right under international law, and whether we choose to exercise it is our business alone. For years we’ve been told, ‘You have no right to enrich; enrichment must be zero.’ Why? ‘Because we’re concerned,’ they say. If you’re concerned, we’re prepared to address that. Have questions? We’ll answer them. Is trust lacking? We’ll build it. But no one has the right to say, ‘You cannot have this because we don’t want you to.’

This is the heart of our resolve: we have stood firm in defense of our own rights. Enrichment matters, but what matters even more is demonstrating that the Islamic Republic of Iran takes orders from no one and submits to no domination.

If there are doubts about the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program, we are ready to answer them. The only path forward is diplomacy. Every other path has been tried and has led nowhere. Negotiations will only succeed when the rights of the Iranian people are recognized and respected, not granted, because our rights are already legitimate in and of themselves. What we ask is simply that they be respected.”

In my view, Araghchi’s statement is more than a dignified reply to the United States. It is a rebuke of the condescending posture the West has held toward Muslims for nearly a century. It is a declaration that the era of bullying and imposed values is over. If Iran emerges from this with its honor intact, God willing, neither the United States nor the Muslim world will be what they once were.

India, which Iran has sucked up to throughout history and even protected it on its genocide in occupied Kashmir, hasn’t said a word on the U.S. and Israel (Indian defense partner), about to destroy Iranian vital power infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Pakistan, a country Iran has been hostile towards, including aiding Indian-backed terrorism in Balochistan, is working overtime to try to stop the war and save Iran, even after being humiliated by Iran over its mediation role.

When this war is over, Iran should do some introspection and maybe course-correct, @araghchi, @Iran_in_India, @IranAmbPak, @IraninIslamabad!

I don’t use social media to pontificate but this needs to be said.

If no off-ramp is found within the next week, history will write of this Middle East conflict as WWIII. Very soon, it will resemble a global conflict in terms of the number of countries involved, the intensity of violence, and the spread of its absolutely catastrophic consequences. Those who can must prevent this from happening.
