Before I left Islam, I was debating a Sudanese Christian who challenged me to name one good thing about Muhammad. Just one.

I thought: easy. We Muslims practically worship Muhammad as the greatest man who ever lived.

So I tried to recall good qualities, honesty, compassion, mercy, love, anything, any single story, and I couldn’t remember one.

So I went to Google and typed: “the qualities of the Prophet.”

Islamic websites came up, and I thought, good, now I’ll have plenty of examples for this guy.

I opened them and was stunned: even the Islamic websites offered no good qualities in the sense he’d challenged me to find.

They praised his courage in spreading Islam, his fighting of Allah’s enemies, his physical strength, and his strictness.

Not one of the qualities the man had asked for.

Even the famous mercy at Mecca, sparing the people who had supposedly persecuted him, turned out to be for strategic reasons.

And when I started digging into the Quran and the sira for myself, I found that he married a child, he took Safiyya, a Jewish woman, the same day he killed her father, her brother, and her husband, trading his companion Dihya seven other captives for her, and posting a guard by the tent in case she tried to avenge them while raping her.

He had the men of the Jewish tribe beheaded, down to boys checked for pubic hair.

He raided trade caravans and took other tribes’ treasures.

He lied and broke truces he asked for.

He slept with all of his 9 wives the same night.

He killed anyone who mocked him.

He recruited raiders with the promise of other cities’ women.

And when his own fighters hesitated to touch married captives, because their husbands were alive and watching, Muhammad told them it was fine because allah said so.

Even the pagans of Arabia had higher morality than he did.

Every one of these acts was stamped with Allah’s approval.

He even married his adopted son’s wife by divine decree.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

I left Islam when I met this disgusting man, a man who turned his qualities into a religion, transmitted it to every generation of Muslims since, and made himself the ceiling of their morality.

Local police SPECIFICALLY CONFIRMED the attack was targeted at Aaron Marin.

I just learned something about California auto insurance that I genuinely cannot believe is legal.

In mid July, my legally parked car was hit by a driver carrying only a $3,000 property-damage limit.

He had insurance through California’s Low Cost Auto Insurance Program (CLCA).

Normal California drivers are required to carry at least $15,000 in property-damage liability.

But under this state-created program, qualifying drivers can carry just $3,000 PER ACCIDENT in property-damage coverage.

Not $3,000 per car.

$3,000 TOTAL.

In my case, there’s allegedly another damaged vehicle making a claim against the same tiny $3,000 pot. My damage alone is already estimated at more than $3,000.

And here’s another part I didn’t know: California says qualifying drivers can participate regardless of immigration status, including drivers with AB 60 licenses (California driver’s license available to people who cannot provide proof of legal immigration status in the United States) provided they can prove they’re low-income.

So California created a system where certain drivers can legally carry a fraction of the liability coverage normally required—and when they cause thousands of dollars in damage, the innocent people they hit can be left fighting over $3,000.

I didn’t choose this insurance policy.

I didn’t cause the accident.

My car was PARKED.

Yet I may be the one left paying for damage someone else caused.

How does that make sense?

I always understood why the Second Amendment was constitutionally protected.

What I never really understood was why people called it a natural right.

Then I moved from New York to Florida.

I didn’t own a gun yet.

One afternoon I was loading things into the trunk of my car outside a HomeGoods when a man approached me.

“Excuse me.”

He must have thought he’d startled me, because he immediately added, “Don’t worry. I’m not going to get close.”

“I’m a New Yorker. I’m used to close. How can I help you?”

He started telling me that he needed money for gas.

At some point while he was talking, I got into my car.

And sitting there, with the conversation still unfolding, I suddenly realized something:

He didn’t know whether I had a gun.

Not somewhere at home.

Not hypothetically.

For all he knew, I could have had one right there in the car, tucked under the steering wheel or within reach.

I didn’t.

But he couldn’t know that.

And in that instant, before I even knew whether his story was true, something changed in the space between us.

I thought about New York.

I thought about my friend who had been murdered in his own apartment during a burglary gone wrong.

Would those men have gone into his apartment if they had believed he might be armed?

I thought about the time I was mugged at gunpoint, with a gun pressed against my temple.

Would that man have approached me with the same confidence if he had believed there was even a possibility that I could defend myself?

I don’t know that either.

But sitting there in that Florida parking lot, listening to this stranger talk, I suddenly understood deterrence in a way I never had before.

Not as military theory.

Not as constitutional law.

As something intimate.

My body. My life. The few feet between one person and another.

For years I had thought about guns primarily as objects: who had one, who shouldn’t have one, what laws should govern them.

Suddenly I understood the question from the other direction.

What changes when another person cannot simply assume that I am defenseless?

I felt taller.

Not because I had a gun.

I didn’t.

But because, for the first time, I understood that someone approaching me could not automatically assume that being physically stronger meant having power over me.

There was uncertainty.

There was a boundary around my body that had to be taken seriously.

Then his story began to fall apart.

I told him I didn’t have cash, but offered to help another way. I could put some gas in his car.

He took off.

So apparently, yes, it was a scam.

But by then I had already understood something much larger than the scam.

The phrase natural right finally made sense to me.

The Constitution had not given me ownership of my body.

It had not given me my life.

It had not invented my right to protect either one.

Those things came first.

What I understood that afternoon was the thing underneath them.

I had once been completely helpless while another human being held a gun against my temple.

Years later, without a gun in my possession at all, I understood what it meant for the person approaching me not to know whether I was helpless.

That uncertainty changed the space between us.

And that was the moment I finally understood the natural right behind the Second Amendment:

My life is mine, and
the right to defend it has to exist before anyone gives me permission to do so.

And she wasn't the only one.... In fact, between 2010-2020, 724 babies were recorded as showing signs of life following abortions in Queensland and Victoria alone. We know that at least one baby a week in Australia will be born alive after an abortion and left to die.

These babies are born alive. They may breathe, have a heartbeat and move, yet they can be denied the right to be treated as a patient!

Whatever your position on abortion, a baby born alive deserves the same protection as every other newborn. That's what why we need the Birth Equality Bill introduced to Federal Parliament by Llew O'Brien.
