Since 1896, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has posted an average return of just +1.2% from May 1st through Halloween of a midterm election year.
In the following winter months from Halloween to May 1st, the index has seen an average return of +10.5%, or +9.3 percentage points higher.
By comparison, excluding midterm election years, the DJIA has returned an average of +2.2% during summer months and +3.5% during winter months.
In other words, this narrows the gap to just +1.3 percentage points outside of midterm election years.
History suggests a volatile summer is ahead.
