I ranch with my 85 year old Dad who has been a die hard Trump fan.

Whenever I criticize any Trump decision, even slightly, he’ll get personally offended and won’t want to talk about it. So I’ve
avoided voicing my disdain over his attacks on Massie, spending, Ag, etc. when Dad is in the room.

Today, after the beef import announcement, Dad shook his head, sadly, and said, “you know, I really don’t think he gives a damn about anyone who isn’t rich, and sure not about ranchers. Never wanted to believe that until today.”

There wasn’t a more stalwart Trump supporter on the planet.

Trump is losing the room.

Worry is a manifestation of pride.

How so? Listen to what Peter teaches: "Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you" (1 Pet. 5:6-7).

Notice the connection. How do we humble ourselves? By casting all our anxieties upon God. How do we act in pride? By shouldering all our anxieties, as if we are capable of holding them up.

The Greek verb translated "casting" is ἐπιρίπτω (epirriptō). It appears only once more in the New Testament, in Luke 19:35, where the disciples "threw" or "cast" their cloaks onto the colt that Jesus rode into Jerusalem.

Peter is telling us to throw every anxiety onto Christ with that same deliberate action. He is also echoing one of the Psalms: “Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you” (55:22). In the Greek translation of the Psalms, the verb is the same one Peter uses: epirriptō.

Why is worry a manifestation of pride? Because when we worry, when we are consumed with anxiety, we act as though everything depends upon us. We think we are the ones who must bear all the burdens of this life. We convince ourselves that whatever comes our way, we have to hold everything together and shoulder every weight ourselves.

That is impossible. You know it. I know it. We all know it.

There are countless things in life that are too heavy for us to bear, too much for us to shoulder.

And that is precisely the point. In humility, we acknowledge that. We confess that we are not strong enough.

Then we do what Peter commands. We cast every anxiety, every worry, every burden upon the One who can shoulder them all, Jesus Christ, because he cares for us.

In humility, cast all your anxieties upon him. Cast every worry, every fear, and every burden upon the One who can bear them. Jesus Christ loves you. He is merciful toward you. And he gladly carries what you never could.
