Imagine being so disconnected from the reality of unemployment in South Africa that when a candidate can't afford taxi fare registers as an indication that s/he is unserious rather than as a real consequence of being unemployed. You scheduled 5 people for interviews, only 1 could make it, and somehow the takeaway was that people don’t want to work instead of the reality that people are struggling to afford the basic cost of accessing employment? That is an disgusting level of detachment. You’re literally recruiting from a pool of people who don’t have money, then acting shocked when 1 of them says they don’t have money? What exactly were they supposed to do? Teleport to your interview? Well, unfortunately our public transport system hasn’t introduced a "pay after you get the job" option yet. Here’s a radical idea: how about you try something practical and modern, like a VIRTUAL INTERVIEW, MAYBE? You might actually get to assess the candidate’s skills instead of their ability to finance the journey to prove they deserve a job. This country can be such an unfunny sitcom sometimes. Nxa!
