Every time I see a non-Black person respond to a Black Culture post from a Black Person with, “Not Black but we did/do that in my house!”
It takes everything in me to not respond, “It’s because we were raising a lot of y’all families until the 60s.”
And I mean EVERYTHING.

My latest photo assignment for The Guardian “The Gullah Geechee Fight for A Legacy After Slavery”. I traveled between St. Helena, Sapelo Island, Hilton Head Island, and Savannah, GA documenting the descendants of the Gullah Geechee and their fight to preserve their culture.
When patients share a story they’ve told me before, I don’t stop them and say that I’ve already heard that one.
Instead I assume that I didn’t hear what they needed me to the last time, and try to listen more deeply and with new ears.
