I was interviewed by @MansviniK for @ForbesIndia to be part of an important topic and a very detailed and fine report on the herbal and dietary supplements/nutraceuticals industry in India.

Here are some hard-hitting facts on herbal and dietary supplements (HDS):
1/ Majority of HDS are untested and unproven and do not have the health benefits they claim.
2/ Majority of HDS are mislabelled, i.e., they do not contain the disclosed ingredients, or have undisclosed components to scam the consumer or cause adverse health events.
3/ HDS is a common cause for liver injury, liver failure and death [see stories on Herbalife, OxyELITE Pro, SlimQUICK].
4/ HDS is the most common cause for increase in liver transplantation in the United States (India will soon follow).
5/ Of the HDS, turmeric containing supplements are a growing problem for liver injury and liver failure which led to the Italian Health Regulatory Authority to issue warning and remove products with turmeric.
6/ A large number of HDS are advertised, promoted and sold with big claims, no evidence - example Ashwaganda, Probiotics, Biotin, Green tea extracts and many more. Actually all of them.
7/ Some supplements have evidence for use and safety margin - example Zinc supplements in a condition called Wilson's disease to reduce copper overload in body.
8/ HDS is not regulated and the choice to use those by the consumer/patient is a gamble at life or death. Some survive, some dont.
With scientific evidence, you dont have to gamble your life away. Evidence-based medicine protects the consumer/patient.
People are prioritising health in the wake of the pandemic. This led to a surge of brands offering dietary supplements in various formats. They promise to improve health and boost immunity. But are they delivering on their promise?
