In this competition, #Finland fares badly. There are two reasons: very progressive taxation and very few people earning top salaries (which affects the average more than the median).
This often happens to cities that are geographically small: the skyrocketing house prices and rents push people outside the city limits. The exact opposite is happening in #Helsinki.
I truly hope #Finland holds on to this European championship despite the current crash of its housing market. Maybe it even helps: the rents of small apartments are at rock bottom.
This is interesting, since gross salaries of course exaggerate the differences in salaries. That applies, in particular, to countries like #Belgium and #Denmark.
I was wondering if this is totally fake. Well, at least I know that #Finland, which was part of #Russia at the time, was in fact more wealthy than the mainland. I guess it’s fair to say that for #France and #TheUK it’s been relative downhill ever since.
This looks much more interesting than any comparison at national level. The geographical concentration of academic people is particularly high in #Finland.
