Göring sagte:
„Natürlich will das Volk keinen Krieg. Warum sollte ein einfacher Bauer sein Leben riskieren, wenn das Beste, was er aus einem Krieg herausholen kann, ist, unversehrt zu seinem Hof zurückzukehren? Niemand will Krieg – weder in Russland, England, Amerika noch in Deutschland. Das ist offensichtlich.

Am Ende aber bestimmen die Führer eines Landes die Politik. Und das Volk dazu zu bringen, diese Politik zu unterstützen, ist einfach. Es spielt keine Rolle, ob es sich um Demokratie, Kommunismus, Parlamentarismus oder eine faschistische Diktatur handelt.“

Gilbert erwiderte:
„Aber die Demokratie hat einen Unterschied – das Volk kann seine Meinung über gewählte Vertreter äu��ern.“

Göring antwortete:
„Natürlich, das ist gut, aber egal, ob das Volk eine Stimme hat oder nicht, es kann immer zur Gehorsam gezwungen werden. Es ist einfach: Sag ihnen, sie werden angegriffen, und beschuldige dann die Pazifisten, unpatriotisch zu sein und das Land zu gefährden. Das funktioniert in jedem Land.“
