🦔Meta is in talks to lease AI computing power to Anthropic for up to $10 billion over two years. Anthropic is also renting compute from SpaceX ($45 billion over three years), a Bitcoin miner called TeraWulf ($19 billion over 20 years), and CoreWeave. That's over $90 billion in infrastructure commitments from a company that has never turned a profit, heading into an IPO at a $965 billion valuation.

My Take
Meta spent $125 to $145 billion on AI infrastructure this year and needs tenants. Anthropic needs compute it can't build fast enough. So Meta is becoming a landlord for the company it competes with. Two weeks ago I posted about Meta floating the idea of renting excess capacity from its Louisiana campus. Now we know who the renter is.

The circular financing here is getting hard to keep track of. Anthropic pays Meta with money from investors betting on the IPO. The IPO valuation depends on revenue growth fueled by spending faster than revenue comes in. A Bitcoin mining company just staked its future on a 20-year lease with an AI startup that didn't exist four years ago. Blue Owl, which froze its own investor withdrawals, is funding the data center Meta plans to lease from. Everyone in this chain is financing everyone else, and none of them are profitable yet.
