🔸 June 19 - Saint Paisios the Great 🏜️ 🔸

Today, we also commemorate our Holy Desert Father Saint Paisios the Great. St Paisios was born in 320 AD in Egypt to pious Christian parents. After the death of his father, his mother had a vision of an angel who asked her to give her youngest son Paisios to the service of the Lord. Thus, the mother of Paisios gave him over to the care of a monastery. As a youth, Paisios loved the monastic life. At age 20, he went to the wilderness of Scetes in the Nitrian desert. Renouncing his own will, he was ordained a monk by St Pambo, who also ordained St John the Dwarf, the future biographer of St Paisios.

Paisios lived under the spiritual guidance of Elder Pambo, humbly completing all the monastic duties assigned to him. The Elder said that a new monk Paisios in particular needed to preserve his sight in order to guard his senses from temptation. Paisios, heeding the instruction, went for three years with his eyes cast downwards. He diligently read spiritual books, prayed, and even fasted for weeks at a time. When St Pambo died, St Paisios went further into the desert to devote himself to the Lord in solitude, and lived in a cave carved out by his own hands.

He was guided by an angel to the site of the present Monastery of St Pishoy (Paisios), where he lived the life of a hermit. In time many monks gathered around him, and a monastery was established. Honored for his love, wisdom, kindness, and asceticism, St Paisios became the spiritual father of many monks at the monastery. When the monks asked Paisios which virtue is the highest of all, the saint replied: “Those which are done in secret, and about which no one knows.”

His ascetic feats were so renowned that he was even visited by St Ephraim the Syrian. Once, an old monk asked St Paisios to help him climb a mountain, so Paisios carried him on his shoulders and climbed, only to discover that the old monk was Christ Himself. The Lord told him that, for the extent of his love, his body would not see corruption. St Paisios reposed peacefully in 417 at a great age. His relics are kept today at the Monastery of St Pishoy (Paisios) in the Nitrian Desert, Egypt.
