@BaoLam89 I always watch an inspirational teaching movie (e.g. Dead Poets Society, Stand and Deliver,etc) the night before I teach that first day. Today I went to the beach to just reflect and meditate on the school year.

Teachers start back today and kids next week. What do you do at the beginning of the year to inspire you? How do you set a tone of optimism and success?

@gstew2 We create a teacher Airband act. My math family (not dept but family...we treat each other as such) organizes events together hoping as many people go as possible: picnics at free outdoor concerts, laser tag, escape room, skiing, BBQ. We also learn together, in town and out.

@gstew2 Take on a student teacher/intern, join/create a math network, write a blog/article/textbook, open up your classroom for others to see...generals aren’t the only ones who lead, and sometimes it’s the troops on the ground that have the most to say. You got this.

@gstew2 Mentor others, present at conferences, SHARE your practice. You don’t have to leave the classroom to impact others, you just need to find those smaller opportunities (which are equally meaningful and transformative).

@gcouros @spencerideas I’ve often said that I teach 90% confidence and 10% math because without the confidence my students won’t do the math. They DEFINITELY need to be affirmed along with adopting a growth mindset

@SonoraReyes Let your greatness out. Don’t be afraid to be proud of your accomplishments, especially if they seem atypical to you. They are an inspiration and others need to hear your story. If you don’t tell it, who will? Go proudly....

Scarier thought...what do we force students to take on as part of their identity when they walk into our classroom? What labels do they see themselves with? How does our talk impact how they see themselves?

At the CANMEE conference on lesson study and we got asked “what part of a student’s identity does he/she have to give up when they walk in the room?�� Do we honor their identity in math class or do we ask them to be other than who they are?

I couldn’t agree more. One size does not fit all. We differentiate for our students in class, we need to do the same with our systems outside of class. We need to be student centered in our teaching and our thinking.

I was awed today and last week by my students. They were discovering the laws of logarithms (power rule, quotient rule and product rule) by looking at patterns and making generalizations. Despite it being a tough topic they all nailed it!!
