"Marathon’s plan has real science behind it. If it works, the achievement would mark the end of the alchemist’s quest... they’re after a technology that could help sate the world’s ever-growing need for energy"
Great writeup from @TheAtlantic this week!

@MarathonFusion, a Breakthrough Energy Fellow, has discovered a way to generate gold during the fusion process—an innovation that could reshape the economics of fusion power. https://t.co/ecT5mjwQK9
"alchemy has been pursued by civilisations as far back as ancient Egypt... Now Marathon Fusion, a start-up focused on using nuclear fusion to generate power, has said the same process could be used to produce gold"
Great writeup from the @FT! Read more: https://t.co/PlFGdIMzr0
Today's free issue of The Diff: The Finance of Alchemy. A fusion startup may have a way to turn mercury into gold. But if you can make a lot of something that's priced because it's scarce, how much is that worth?
People who argue fusion energy won't be cost competitive against fission don't realize that a 1GW fusion reactor can produce 2 tons of gold per year by transmuting mercury.
This means Fusion Energy has a 50:50 revenue split between electricity and alchemy.
Congrats to the team at @MarathonFusion for identifying a plausible, scalable process for transmuting mercury into gold.
This is something that drove Isaac Newton insane.
