Happy New Year!
“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world.” — @neilhimself

Deeply sad about Notre Dame, but shocked at the hypocrisy of humanity.
We destroy over 150 acres of rainforest every minute and do not give it a second thought, yet fall into mourning at the loss of a building.
I was lucky enough to meet No Outsiders Headteacher at Parkfield School,Andrew Moffat yesterday evening - thank you LBGT+ members. Andrew and his staff are so impressive the children are fortunate to attend Parkfield. #NEU19
Only small steps but, we try to reduce stress on teachers:
1. When classes reach 20 students, they are split.
2. Most teachers have a 60% or less teaching load.
3. The school day is shortened by an hour, all paid for clubs are ran by externals.
#teacherwellbeing
1. Students "under achieve"
2. Teacher told to "intervene"
3. "I know! - i'll do extra revision sessions"
4. Few kids turn up
5. Teacher wastes time/energy
6. Teacher has less time to plan/assess
8. Students achieve less
9. More interventions suggested
10, teacher depressed
Yet more schools today talking about the ‘phenomenal’ impact of 1-1 5-10 minute conferences with children every 3 weeks focusing on a piece of writing from the week. This replaces post lesson marking. People want to know how to organise this-how are you making this work?
Happy New Year!
“For last year's words belong to last year's language
And next year's words await another voice.
What we call the beginning is often the end
And to make and end is to make a beginning.”
–T. S. Eliot
‘We are addicted to exams … but measuring success by exam results is fuelling stress, anxiety and failure among pupils, teachers, and schools...It’s clear from what we know that improving kids’ wellbeing is a much better way of improving their lives’ 👏👏 https://t.co/Z8TlpVvnSv
@MissMilnerTHPA Have you read Visible Learning Feedback by me and John Hattie? Came out in August and is much more current- key message that in-lesson feedback is more effective than post lesson marking....
Aaaagh! Lesson observations are pretty pointless...the better a lesson looks the less is often remembered. Chn struggling and involved in desirable difficulties tend to remember more in the long run.
Let's bring an end to the shooting of seals in Scotland by only sourcing salmon from farms that use safe, alternative seal deterrent methods . . . @LushTimesEN

Every day we put 25 children in a small room, engage them in activities they didn’t choose, sit them with people they didn't choose to be with... that’s quite demanding, says Bill Rogers https://t.co/GuhOwR0yfj
Why bosses should care about work-life balance: When we feel engaged and supported at work, that positive feeling extends to our family life. And support at home enables us to pursue our professional goals.

BANG , BANG you're dead ! If you're a Red Grouse today or were an Eagle or a Hen Harrier over the moors in the last year . If you read one thing on this inglorious day please read this account of the 'screamingly elitist' grouse shooting business , after all , you've paid for it
You know what? I’m not a fan of homework but home PRACTICE I can totally get on board with. Only send home stuff to reinforce class learning. Why have I never called it Home Practice?
