Saville Theatre, London, January 29, 1967. Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, Jimi Hendrix, John Entwistle and Keith Moon backstage, with Jimi holding a Rickenbacker 12-string instead of his usual Stratocaster. The Jimi Hendrix Experience opened for The Who that night at the theatre owned by Beatles manager Brian Epstein. "Hey Joe" had entered the UK charts a month earlier on its way to number six, and the Experience were signed to Track Records, the new label run by Who managers Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp.
🎸 Jimi's next single, "Purple Haze," came out that March and reached number three in the UK. Would you rather have seen the Experience or The Who that night? 🎸
Nirvana's landmark album Nevermind, released in 1991, has achieved a monumental milestone by surpassing AC/DC's Back in Black on the list of the best-selling albums of all time.
According to updated figures from Chartmasters, the album that immortalized Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl climbed to sixth place on the chart with 66.832 million equivalent sales.
This narrow margin (just 1,000 units ahead of AC/DC’s 66.831 million) rewrites the record books. While the Australian band’s classic still holds the lead in physical vinyl sales, the overwhelming strength of the digital catalog and streaming of grunge’s seminal work ultimately tipped the scales in favor of the Seattle trio.
The achievement carries even more weight when viewed alongside the giants that surround it, as it has also surpassed Pink Floyd’s iconic album The Dark Side of the Moon.
Freddie Mercury and Brian May back to back on stage in the mid-'70s, Freddie in those red-and-white striped shorts and braces. He wore them on Queen's tours from 1976, and he was in on the joke: "That's why I can wear ridiculous shorts on stage and ham it up."
