Lots of folks seemed PRETTY sure that giving ketamine during general anesthesia to "block the trip" was pointless, anesthesia silences the brain and ketamine won't work. We checked. Just out in @JAMAPsych. Below: frequency heatmaps over the course of 40 min, + and - anesthesia:

@AmieBurbridge@DrBenLovell@MedEd See e.g. this BMJ case report: https://t.co/AEVIBZ80UD. The rest of the case of course points to Bell's, but as a med student who finds your podcasts incredibly helpful just wanted to check this detail. Thanks for all your podcasting work! 2/2
@AmieBurbridge@DrBenLovell@MedEd Hi! Around 12min in, you discuss how a pontine lesion wouldn't fit with LMN symptoms. Can I check this is correct, please? I thought as pontine CN VII nucleus is where the LMN starts, it would still be a LMN lesion, with a cerebral stroke being UMN 1/2
@DrMattThomas1 Can I ask how difficult it has been commuting as a trainee if you don't drive, please? I've heard that w/o driving rotational training (maybe outside London) largely condemns one to long commutes or frequent moves - true? Did it inform your choices of regions?

@kfshinozuka Not exactly on JNDs, but the Yoneda lemma work comes to mind: "two objects A and B in a category can be equivalent if and only if all the relationships that A holds with others in the category are the same as those of B" https://t.co/igWIo85MqW
My thanks go to my co-authors @kwarnaby and Jamie Sleigh, as well as our reviewers and funders. As always, paper is open access and all code can be found here: https://t.co/gV6POtxIAy
📢New paper finally out in @_Anesthesiology! Unexpectedly complex question: what is the effect of propofol on the heart rate? 💉❤️

This cortico-cardiac coupling in propofol anaesthesia could be due to a common brainstem generator. Its significance needs further investigation, but as someone interested in brain-heart interactions, I'm excited. 4/N
