Europe’s highest literary and intellectual forms were first forged in Greece and Rome. The other peoples of Europe did not begin with the same literary civilisation. They inherited it, studied it, translated it, imitated it and, in time, made it their own. Homer, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Herodotus, Thucydides, Plato, Aristotle, Euclid, Archimedes and Hippocrates, together with Cicero, Virgil, Livy, Seneca, Tacitus and the Roman jurists, became the teachers of Europe. The inheritance of Hellas and Rome gave Europe the intellectual machinery of civilisation itself. Without literacy, logic, historical memory, systematic inquiry and written law, knowledge cannot accumulate across generations. Without that accumulated knowledge, there can be no modern science, no great engineering and no technological civilisation.
