@Hungryhxg And I think it’s an overcorrection in both cases, of ppl getting fed up when “their” character is pilloried daily by the fandom. Like it doesn’t feel great. But the overcorrection also makes me cringe, yeah
@Hungryhxg Yes ppl do infantilize him/vilify the girls in their defense of him, and I try not to do that in my own defenses of him. Idk if I always succeed. But I think this pendulum swing btwn “evil” and “baby” is very common in this fandom and smth we also see w Shauna
I also find it fascinating that (from what I see) it’s Ben and Shauna that get the most vitriolic hatred in the fandom—often from ppl who dismiss their traumas and misrepresent their motivations. But Shauna also has plenty of defenders, so I feel defensive of Ben
There’s a sizeable chunk of Yellowjackets fandom that gets like. Foaming-at-the-mouth angry when you point out that Ben’s disability is an important part of the narrative, actually
But if you try to point this out to ppl on twt you often get the online equivalent of someone sticking their fingers in their ears and going lalalalala
@venusprincessin@ChukwukaIbe@BuckleUpShipman Yeah I don’t get this at all. The only way they can justify the vitriolic hatred they have for this character is by tuning out every time he’s on screen
@gayshaunagenda@BuckleUpShipman Yeah, you’re describing ableism. The girls carry all kinds of societal baggage w them when they remake their own society in the wilderness. (The trial, anyone?) Ppl in our society also thing they’re justified when they treat disabled ppl as lesser
@BuckleUpShipman You can argue that Lottie’s mental illness is a disability, sure, but he’s the only dependent. You can stretch the term to include however many YJs you want, but Ben is the only character whose physical disability severely impacts his QoL and chances of survival
@BuckleUpShipman@Beidous_Rat Ben’s psychosis causes paranoia and depression and further isolates him from the group. (Sounds like someone else in s3, huh…)
@BuckleUpShipman@Beidous_Rat As I wrote in the rest of my reply, Lottie is part of the group—she’s not isolated the way Ben is. And psychotic breaks don’t all look the same. Lottie’s gives her delusions that they’ve tapped into a mystical world that binds them all together—it’s euphoric at times
@BuckleUpShipman@Beidous_Rat Who gives Ben emotional support? Who encourages him, or reaches out to him when he’s clearly unwell? Being an adult doesn’t mean you can function in emotional isolation like that. In fact, Ben’s arc is in large part about how ppl fall apart in isolation
@BuckleUpShipman@Beidous_Rat Misty, otoh, seems to be experiencing a panic attack. And she doesn’t “get over it” by herself. Lottie gives her a pep talk and the emotional support she needs to steady herself
