[ArchaeoHistories @histories_arch]

On May 11, 330 AD, Roman Emperor Constantine the Great formally inaugurated the rebuilt city of Byzantium as NOVA ROMA (“New Rome”), the future Constantinople, establishing it as the new imperial capital of the Roman Empire.

Constantine rose to power during the collapse of the Tetrarchy, a period of civil wars and imperial rivalry that engulfed the Roman Empire in the early 4th Century AD.

His most famous early victory came at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge against the rival emperor Maxentius in 312 AD.

According to Christian tradition, before the battle Constantine experienced a vision of the Cross alongside the Latin words “IN HOC SIGNO VINCES” (“In this sign, conquer”), rendered in Greek tradition as “ΕΝ ΤΟΥΤΩ ΝΙΚΑ” (“Thru this (symbol) you are going to achieve victory”)

The Christian scholar Lactantius, who later became associated with Constantine’s court, was among the earliest writers to record and promote accounts of the emperor’s divine vision and Christian inspiration before the battle.

Before the battle, Constantine reportedly ordered his troops to paint the “Chi-Rho” symbol (☧) upon their shields. The Chi-Rho was formed from the first two Greek letters of "Christos" (“Christ”) - Χ (Chi) and Ρ (Rho) and would later become one of the earliest and most famous symbols of Christianity.

To stabilize the empire and prevent further civil war, Constantine allied himself with another rival Emperor Licinius by giving his sister Constantia in marriage to him.

The two emperors divided imperial authority between themselves, with Constantine ruling the Western Roman Empire primarily from Rome while Licinius governed the Eastern Roman Empire from Nicomedia in Asia Minor (present-day İzmit, Turkey).

Together, they issued the Edict of Milan in 313 A.D., officially ending the persecution of Christians and granting religious toleration throughout the Roman Empire, allowing Christianity to practice openly under imperial protection.

However, Licinius, a conservative pagan increasingly viewed Rome’s political instability and growing troubles as the consequence of abandoning the traditional Roman gods in favor of Christianity.

Relations between the two emperors steadily deteriorated, culminating in the final civil war of 324 A.D., when Constantine decisively defeated Licinius at the Battle of Chrysopolis near Byzantium. Licinius was forced to abdicate and, although initially spared through the pleas of Constantia, was later executed on Constantine’s orders after being accused of conspiring against the emperor.

Following his victory over Licinius, Constantine realized that the empire’s political and economic future lay in the east rather than in old Rome. Rome itself had suffered from decades of political instability and civil wars, while the western provinces increasingly faced pressure from hostile Germanic barbarian tribes and Gothic invasions.

Constantine therefore sought a new capital that was strategically secure, economically vibrant, and centrally located between Europe and Asia.

He chose the ancient Greek city of Byzantium on the Bosporus Strait. The location was extraordinarily valuable: it controlled the trade routes between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, linked Europe and Asia, possessed strong natural defenses with water on three sides, and was surrounded by defensible hills.

Whoever controlled Byzantium controlled one of the most important crossroads in the ancient world.

Constantine massively expanded and rebuilt the city with imperial palaces, forums, churches, walls, and monuments. His guiding vision was reflected in the threefold motto:

VNVS DEVS • VNVM IMPERIVM • VNVS IMPERATOR

(One God, One Empire, One Emperor), a declaration that Christian monotheism would now mirror and sanctify the reunified Roman state under a single divinely sanctioned Augustus.

@FilmSheppard I see your point, I guess I'm somewhere in the middle. I'm cynical enough to be pragmatic, but I like heroes so I insist on happy endings 😄

@FilmSheppard Wow, what a humane approach, well done! I hope you win! Mine it's exactly the opposite, morals go down the drain as my main character is trying to sell a bankrupt bank in Ukraine to the lesser evil (bidder).

[Marianda VP @MariandaVP]

@FilmSheppard Congratulations for your selection! I'm also trying to work my schedule out so I can make it happen, even though I'm based in Greece. The Banksters is a banking thriller which takes place in Ukraine during 2013. What's "The Complex" about?
