On this day in 1881: Scientist Alexander Fleming was born near Darvel in Ayrshire. In 1928, he returned from holiday to find that a fungus had killed some bacteria on his manky lab dishes. He had actually just discovered the world's first antibiotic, which he named Penicillin.
