It was a privilege to make my Maiden Speech, celebrating local people. 🌹
Our local communities nurtured me growing up, and now it’s the honour of my life to be elected your MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge.
I’m the first MP in 100 years to have grown up here. (🧵) 1/7
Good news for pensioners across our country.
The government has confirmed that if the state pension is your only source of income, you will not pay income tax.
Along with the triple lock, that means 12 million pensioners will see their income rise by up to £470 this year alone.
I was anorexic for four years when I was a teenager. As a disabled teenager, the support wasn’t there when I needed it.
It was so important to chat to @channel4news about the urgent need for a mental health strategy for people with limb loss and limb difference.
Another great doorknocking session for our Penistone East by-election candidate, John Roberts.
John lives in Penistone and was an exceptional councillor.
Here’s hoping he wins it back when the by-election is held on Thursday 20th August🤞
🍻Cheers to this!🍻
The Prime Minister @andyburnham has announced that business rates are being slashed for pubs, clubs, and live music venues – providing £1,100 on average of breathing space per pub next year.
I couldn’t be more delighted!
No one should be priced out of transport.
£2 cap on buses, the first freeze on rail fares in 30 years, will help ease the burden of the cost-of-living squeeze.
This is how you serve all parts of the country.
Last week, I attended a Parliamentary reception hosted by @MarieTidball to mark Disability Pride Month and highlight the experiences of people with limb loss and limb difference.
The event brought together children, young people, families, charities and campaigners.
I chatted to @BBCR4today about the role of empathy in politics.
I’m so proud to have heard @AndyBurnham stand on Downing Street this week and say boldly that he will put the care of people at the heart of everything he does.
Let’s bring back hope.
@AndyBurnham has cut VAT for electricity bills.
Andy also stood outside No10 yesterday and said his first instruction will be to end rough sleeping in our country.
It’s clear already that Andy is taking bold action for people and places that have been left behind for too long.
Huge congratulations to @AndyBurnham, becoming our new Prime Minister yesterday.
I’m thrilled to see a fantastic South Yorkshire MP @JohnHealey_MP appointed Chancellor, putting crucial discussions about re-industrialisation, steel and defence at the heart of our government.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham says he'll oversee the biggest change to Britain in 40 years - with a new political and economic model.
In his first speech on the steps of Downing Street without a podium, he pledges:
- To provide immediate cost of living support, with plans and how they'll be funded announced from tomorrow to give people "breathing space"
- A ten-year plan to reverse privatisation and deindustrialisation
- To honour defence spending plans announced by his predecessor and stick to the fiscal rules
- To end rough sleeping
- To "bring back hope"
“I will put the care of people at the heart of everything I do,” Andy Burnham says during his first speech as PM
He adds “I will give this my all”

‘Wimbledon may be over but kids still need a chance to play’.
Latest piece from me and @RubyBishop_ via @labourlist on our campaign for inclusive sport.
Glad to be working with @marietidball and others to open up opportunities for all young people. https://t.co/IgPpd3dyjz
Justice delayed is justice denied – I know what a difference this will make to victims of rape and serious sexual offences across our country.

It’s so important to see this national approach being taken to court listings, which will prioritise rape and serious sexual offence cases in Crown Courts in England and Wales.
These changes will mean faster justice for rape victims, with cases heard sooner and delays reduced.
I regularly hear from constituents about the impact of loud and unexpected firework, so I welcome the launch of a new 12-week consultation on the largest review of fireworks legislation since rules were introduced 👇️

When I said I was going to do politics differently, I meant it.
Yesterday I spent a couple of hours in Cardiff city centre inviting people to ask me anything about my plans for the UK.
My parents taught me that whilst I don’t have a choice about my disability, I do have a choice about how I respond to it and turn it into a positive.
To celebrate Disability Pride Month, it was wonderful to bring together our limb loss and limb difference community in Parliament
