📌French journalist detained in Istanbul, faces possible deportation
French journalist Raphaël Boukandoura was detained on January 19 in Istanbul’s Sancaktepe district while covering a protest organized by the pro-Kurdish DEM Party against the offensive in northern Syria. His statement was taken by the Security Branch, where Boukandoura said he was present strictly in his capacity as a journalist and was reporting on the demonstration for Libération.
During questioning, police asked Boukandoura about slogans allegedly chanted during the protest. He stated that he did not chant any slogans and was at the scene solely to report.
On Tuesday, Boukandoura was transferred to Sarıgazi Police Station and is expected to be referred to the Provincial Directorate of Migration. He may face deportation.
MLSA Legal Unit is following his case.
Eight journalists detained in Istanbul for covering Saraçhane protests
Seven journalists were detained this morning in Istanbul what was reportedly a police operation citing violations of Turkey’s Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations.
Those detained include photojournalists Bülent Kılıç, Kurtuluş Arı—who works for Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB)—Yasin Akgül of AFP, Ali Onur Tosun of Now TV, BirGün columnist Barış İnce, @sendika_org correspondent Zişan Gür and journalists Hayri Tunç and Zeynep Kuray.
According to initial reports, the detentions were carried out on the grounds of alleged non-compliance with Law No. 2911, which regulates public assemblies and demonstrations in Turkey.
The journalists are expected to be taken to the Istanbul Police Department’s Vatan Street headquarters for processing. MLSA Legal Unit lawyers would be present at the Vatan Police Department to support the detained journalists.
Let’s put geopolitical analysis aside for a minute and remember that those are humans who deserve to live with dignity and freedom of choice.
The joy on the faces of those who’ve been freed from torture prisons after being wrongfully imprisoned for years in #Syria is unmatched.

Şu an bulunduğum noktada soğutma çalışmaları bile mahallelilere kalmış durumda.

“We do everything. We wear our press jackets. We wear our helmets. But we have been targeted in normal places where normal citizens are.”
Al Jazeera's journalist Hind Khoudary reports on the killing of her colleagues, journalist Ismail al-Ghoul and cameraman Rami al-Rifee, who were killed by an Israeli air strike that targeted their car in Gaza.
Al-Ghoul and al-Rifee were targeted after they finished their coverage. They were on their way to al-Ahli Arab Hospital after being asked to leave the area by Israeli forces.
The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists has reported that 108 media workers have been killed as of July 5, making this the deadliest period since the group began gathering data in 1992.
Combien de journalistes gazaouis, combien de nos confrères et consoeurs palestiniens qui ne font que leur travail d'information vont devoir être tués à Gaza ? Rest in power Ismail al-Ghoul.
